You can't look at anything specific. Qualities change. Age, kids, money, family all can change a quality that you see today. Dat arse will not be dat arse after 20 years and 3 kids. Those big tits will be at her waist. Your six pack will get hidden by your tool shed. Your morning wood will stop wooding. So, you can not look for superficial qualities. If you can tolerate each others company, for any length of time, she is probably the right one.

I was very specific.

I wanted a woman who is more attractive than me. Height was important to me. No short girls that will turn fat. I also wanted tall children. Check.

I wanted a woman that was an athlete (i wanted athletic kids). (Played college sports, check)

I wanted someone extremely intelligent.
(Magna cum laude undergrad and top of class for doctorate, check).

I found all these things, so i got married at 22.

If you want your kids to excel, genetics are key.

*The short, fat, uneducated, unathletic people married to trolls, let your envy hit that downvote.

In the good ole days

"sammich"

would have been listed at least 5 times on page 1.

"inb4sammich" would have been the first response.

This is the right advice but there is one caveat.

Those who get together really young and stay together. Often termed, 'High School sweethearts'. These are sometimes some of the strongest relationships out there and you saw it lot in the Greatest Generation.

Speaking from experience, what happens here is, because you're together when you're young your personalities, views and habits are more malleable and therefore you grow together and shape each other. If you wait to get together when you're older, then your personality is already set and you're stuck in your ways. In that case it requires a more perfect match. A puzzle piece that just happens to fit. A young couple is more like modeling clay. The two can just shape each other together through their own experiences. It makes an even more complete bond. The relationship is made even stronger over time because then they look back at those experiences as unique and tend to value the relationship even more because they know that they can't replicate that again in a new relationship. That's why people tend to look back at their high school and college years as the most exciting times in their lives and the friends they make during that time period tend to be strong and lifelong.

Can someone explain to me why in the world politics would matter that much? Unless you were actively involved in politics in a way that put you in direct conflict every day, I can't see how it matters.

I follow politics closely and have some strong opinions but it doesnt mean that it matters one whit when I go home.

Seems like people put way too much emphasis on political identity these days.

You're wording it like you go down to the store and thump a few of them like they're watermelons

Date around until you find someone you like. I wouldn't hop into anything through the conscious prism of "will you be a suitable wife." Seems like that's a recipe for nitpicking every little flaw about someone, and we're all flawed

My first marriage was to my personality twin. Driven, strong willed, opinionated, aggressive, unwilling to relinquish power. The goods were GREAT, but the bad was BAD. In hindsight, it's a miracle it lasted as long as it did.

My current wife is much more passive and solely focused on her family. It's worked brilliantly for the last 10 years.

politics are tied to personal beliefs, like abortion for example.

wife 1.0 ultimately became a codependent nag so when I had chance to pursue wife 2.0, I looked for:

Independent with a good career
Did not want kids but is great with my kids
Intelligent
Athletic
Has a great network of friends
