re: What can be done about the scourge of E-Bikers?

I rode an e-bike for the first time in a national park. It was awesome.
I would never take them on highways as I value my life too much to risk losing it being a dumbass.

So you based you purchase (to some degree) on a legal interpretation from a guy with a) no law degree and b) a clearly vested interest.
Thanks for sharing this unbiased and expert information.
Do what? In what world did anything I said make you think that the reason I bought the bike (in any degree) is because of what he said?
I simply asked him about it during the process. His answer had zero (i.e. no degrees) bearing on me getting the bike.
But thanks for trying to sound cool while actually sounding like an idiot, I guess.
Do you have a law degree? I sure hope so, otherwise your information here is just as useless (per you).

Why would I take on cars on a bike?
It seems like a lot of bikers have the exact opposite view as you (and I agree with you as well). Bike or e-bike, I'd never ride it in a place where I am dodging actual vehicular traffic. If a road is busy enough where there are lots of cars, I simply wouldn't ride there. But also about 90% of my bike riding is done in my neighborhood.

BTW, you do realize the posted limiting is the max you can go, right? It's not mandatory you reach that speed.
This is sort've true but not 100%, you will definitely attract law enforcement if you're the slow arse going 25 in a 45 zone, unless you're driving a tractor or something
I can't stand seeing kids driving golf carts either, there are so many <12 year olds in my neighborhood driving them & ebikes. They don't stop at stop signs & don't know shite about hand signals.

I agree. It’s gonna take more dead folks before laws will be passed.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of kids riding these things.

My problem with them is encountering them on the road at 5:30 AM and they always seem to be dressed in all black clothing and no reflectors on the ‘ e bike’.
Had one last week who drove around the intersection of Old Hammond and Sharp to by pass the red traffic light. Then he got in the middle of the lane on Sharp going 25mph. No one could pass him and no shoulders or sidewalk.

In all truth, nothing.
Officers are not gonna get into a “pursuit” of an e bike when they don’t stop so what’s the point of chasing one if you can’t stop them?
So really the only answer is to run into them

That is crazy on any bike. Mine has lights that are hub-powered and always on, and my bike has reflective decals and tires. I always wear a helment and hi-viz clothing.
Do I look like a goober? Maybe. But I get all the loving I need from my wife, so the priority is coming home alive to enjoy our life together.

Per the place I got mine from they are legally the same class as bicycles, so anywhere bikes can go, e-bikes can also go. At least that's what he told me because I specifically asked about that.
I'm not positive here, but I think bikes used to not be allowed on sidewalk. Of course it wasn't enforced, but I don't think technically it's allowed
This is one of those only enforced if you are being an arse and/or are involved in an accident.
My understanding is the riding on the sidewalk rule/law varies based on which city/parish/county you are talking about. In Orleans, Jefferson & St. Charles parish, anyone 15+ should be riding in the street. But, if an adult is riding with a small child, or they are simply cruising along and being courteous; I cannot imagine anyone will mind.

Are you saying you truly don't understand what a "speed limit" is?
I get what you're trying to say. But the posted speed limit is 100% the max you are supposed to legally drive on that road. Anything over that is illegal and you could get ticketed for it.
I mean, it's literally what "limit" means.

FIFY
The laws may not cite e-bikes specifically, but majority of the issues with them (no helmets, impending traffic, running lights/stop signs, no reflectors...) would still apply to them.

And bikes are not allowed on sidewalks by law.
How do you not know that?

In Lafayette, it's mostly hippies and people in their 60's. The city is chocked full of bike lanes, so it's not a big deal.

My bike guy says his insurer will not let him work on ebikes because of liability concerns.
This is why I don't buy one. Where do you go to get them repaired, particularly those you buy online? I'd rather buy a Honda 125; they're about the same price and are tough, durable, machines.
The old Mini Trail 50, Trail 70, and Trail 90 have all been updated and upgraded to 125 cc.

Know some folks that get a buddy to pace their group on one lol. Basically a super domestique on steroids. On the longer rides they’ll load him down too with bidons and such. There is a beauty symbiosis there I think.

Oh, well then, that changes EVERYTHING.
Wait, isn’t there something somewhere about “ignorance of the law not being a valid excuse”? Maybe I’m tripping….

I live in Bossier/Shreveport, so a fairly large area, and I rarely see them. Not sure they are quite a "scourge."
I did see one last week and the dude made it down half of Airline drive in the same time frame that I did while being on the sidewalk. Props to him.

I agree. I always view cycling from a defensive perspective. I’ve had a couple of near misses that woke me up years ago.
