Officers are not gonna get into a “pursuit” of an e bike when they don’t stop so what’s the point of chasing one if you can’t stop them?

Saw a Jefferson Parish Levee Board cop chasing two teens yesterday. They were riding on the levee with e-bikes that looked like small motorcycles and they were hauling arse. Probably over 50 mph. Cop lit up his lights and chased them down the path and then down the face of the levee. Don't know the outcome but that cop was on them quick.

So you based you purchase (to some degree) on a legal interpretation from a guy with a) no law degree and b) a clearly vested interest.

Thanks for sharing this unbiased and expert information.

You think he went i the store and said "Sit I will by an e-bike from you but your answer to my next question about riding on sidewalks will be the determining factor in whether or not I buy one of these"?

It doesn’t have to be E-Bikers a lot of regular bikers think they own the roads in town. And creating bike lanes hasn’t helped a whole lot

Kids playing in the street. Not going to complain as long as they’re inside the neighborhood.

Outside the neighborhood it’s a parenting issue. Find their dad then f*** his wife.

fwiw, these aren't kids I'm talking about. they're grown arse adults. likely with the mind of a kid though.

In Lafayette, it's mostly hippies and people in their 60's. The city is chocked full of bike lanes, so it's not a big deal.

They're putting in a lot of bike lanes in BR as well, but these asshats don't use them, they will ride down the middle of the street with a 3 foot bike lane about 4 feet to their right. Can't miss it, it's a bright arse green color.

As for it being illegal to ride on the side walk, no one cares about laws in this state so that's a none argument, just get on the interstate to see proof of that. No one ever got tickets for staying on the sidewalk 40 years ago and no one is going to get a ticket today.

Bike lanes are good. But they tend to end suddenly in a lot of places. And in NOLA, you still run the risk that someone opens a car door on you, as the parking lane next to the bike line is often full of parked cars.

We finally had a kid get hit on one a couple of weeks ago here in the Bham suburbs. It won’t be long now before the locals do something about it. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Only a matter of time before a kid gets killed.

Are you saying you truly don't understand what a "speed limit" is?

Not at all, how did you read my comment & reach that conclusion?

It's not mandatory you reach that speed.

I was addressing this point. It's not mandatory that you reach that speed, but there is a (somewhat subjective) minimum as well. Ever seen the signs on the interstate?

GA code will ticket you for impeding the flow of traffic when driving at what a cop deems "unreasonably slow" speed on any public roadway. I had to look it up, but according to LA law, you can be ticketed for the same offense on ANY multi lane highways, not just the interstate.

Idk how many bikes you see on the highways, but these shits impede traffic all the time in my South GA city.

They haul arse through stop signs. A sheriff actually hit one in a small town.

For some reason I'm less upset at e-bikers than I am at the scooter fruits.

Drive around any major city and there will be a gang of these fagondalas cruising slowly clogging up traffic.

The e-bikes mostly seem to be kids in neighborhoods and I'll admit it looks like fun. Might get one and zip around the park.

BTW, you do realize the posted limiting is the max you can go, right? It's not mandatory you reach that speed.

If you're driving or riding on a motor vehicle roadway and you are not going the posted speed limit or around 5 under or 10 over, you're an a-hole and shouldn't be on the road to begin with.

I will add that more then 10 over is generally more acceptable than more than 5 under.

I got an e-bike a few months ago and I absolutely love it. But I'm also not an inconsiderate a-hole and only ride it where I'm supposed to.

But it's gotten me out and riding bikes with my son (6) now, and we love doing that together. I'll also take him riding around places sometimes and he loves that. We've been to LSU and rode around for hours, the abandoned Dumas golf course in Baker (the cart path is still there), etc.

I highly recommend one...just only ride it where bikes are supposed to be and still obey all traffic laws (which is definitely a problem with e-bikers as well as regular bikers).

Same. I recently got a foldable Lectric XP4 long range (85 miles). Thought it would be fun to ride around town for fun and easy errands... and would be good to take on trips to cruise around on. I love it. I also have my regular road/gravel bike and mountain bike.

I'm not sure why you think that. If a bicycle is in a legal position, there is zero reason to defer to traffic, because he is part of traffic at that point.
Courteous? Yes. Obligated? No

Guess that depends on your survival instinct.

The penalty for getting that wrong is death or injury.

I can get pretty much everywhere I need to go on a bike within minutes of what it would take in a car, and that involves stopping and slowing when I don't legall have to do so.

Why would I take on cars on a bike?

Exactly. Sure, you may technically have a "right" to the road. But cars are way more visible than bikes and get in wrecks with each other all the time. What would be a simple fender bender in cars, with minimal property damage and no injuries, could very likely result in a fatality or serious injury on a bike.

So, as a friend used to ask with regard to this type of situation... Do you want to be "dead right?" Or do you want to be realistic and safe. Those roads were not built for bicycles. They were built and paved for automobile and truck traffic.

When I'm on a bike, I ride lower trafficked back roads, always use the bike lane when there is one, and ride on bike paths when possible. I always stop at red lights and stop signs too... and I have lights on if I'm riding when it's dark or getting dark.
