I was told that some of the largest oilfield service companies like Halliburton and Baker considered Lafayette for there headquarters back the 80's I think.

The Disney thing is an urban legend. Disney had been quietly buying up land in Central Florida since about the time Disneyland opened and he saw how successful it was going to be.

Formosa in St. James Parish. Still trying to build plant and create well-paying jobs, while giving the local economy a good shot in the arm along with it. It would replace the dollars lost in the parish coffers when Motiva/Shell oil refinery closed down, also.
But activists, local & far, have attempted to block it from ever being built.

I have no clue about refinery issues. Not commenting on that. Disney here was a myth though.

IMO a gas station is not worth the tax incentives they they demanded. Louisiana was right to tell them no.
Sounds about right for the average Louisianian: Tax incentive for a gas station that will pull in gasoline tax is a hard pass.

But tax incentives for that massive leech know as the movie industry is a good thing. Even though I’m pretty sure the State ended up in the negative on that deal.

Yes and no. The land was bought in FL. They were building drainage infrastructure and grading lots. At the same time, they were negotiating with a committee put together by Gov. John McKeithen. They were asking for tax incentives. When they got the tax incentives from LA, they went to FL and used that to negotiate a sweeter deal with FL.

They then went back to LA and showed them what FL was offering. LA upped its game. They then re-approached FL and got even more. Rumor had it that VA was used in the same way as LA was. Reedy Creek was churning out one construction product after another, with nobody knowing it was for Disney.

I often wonder if Slidell, Mandeville, Hammond, or whoever would've become just as big as modern Orlando AND be a twin city of NOLA, or if it'd be considered an "outskirts of NOLA" attraction. Too bad we'll never know. Twin cities or not, the region probably would've become one of the biggest in the US population wise.

Automotive industry has been a big part of the AL economy for the past 25 years now.

We have Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes, Toyota, and New Flyer (I think they make buses). And with each of those plants you have hundreds more facilities that are suppliers for the big plants all around the state.

Bell Helicopter - Lafayette

Bell never came to fruition.

Yep. I don't know what exactly happened with that. They were going to produce a new model helicopter called the Ranger X

Bell had their signs up and had around 10-15 employees working in that building for about a year getting everything setup for production. I took a tour of the facility with couple of their employees and stayed in touch with them while they were getting setup. One of the guys was from Utah and had bought a house in Lafayette during the process

Unfortunately they never hired the additional employees to start production.

Edit: Moved production to canada
quote:

Main production started in 2016[6] in an 82,300-square-foot (7,646 m²), $26.3 million hangar facility at Lafayette Regional Airport in Louisiana,[12] but the tooling was created for assembly in different places in the world.[9] Louisiana offered $8 million in support for 250 new jobs,[12] and started construction of the factory in August 2014 which was then leased to Bell.[13] The factory opened in August 2015.[14] On May 19, 2016, Bell Helicopter CEO Mitch Snyder announced changes to the production supply chain that include relocating the Bell 505 production to Bell Helicopter's assembly and distribution center in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada. The Lafayette Assembly Center, which was specifically designed to manufacture and deliver the 505, will instead complete Bell 525 sub-assemblies and perform work on Northrop Grumman MQ-8C Fire Scout UAVs.[15] Initial assembly, flight testing and certification started in Canada while the factory is being built in the US.[6] First flight went to 60 knots on November 11, 2014,[4] and the second test aircraft flew in February 2015.[16] Bell said they had 240 Letters of intent (LOI) (50 from Europe) for the 505 in October 2014,[17] and in November Chinese tourism operator Reignwood increased their LOI from 10 to 60 of the type.[18] In August 2015, Bell had 350 Letters of intent.[14]

Elio Motors - Shreveport

This joke, right?! Right?!
I believe they are in the former GM plant but sold off the tooling & have produced absolutely NOTHING. Late last year, this fraud trotted out another concept, but ELECTRIC! Wow! Just a vaporware fraud company.
It still amazes me that that the former Gm plant hasn’t gotten interest from other auto makers that are building in the south….oh yeah, it’s Louisiana.

There are way too many tid bits out there about Disney building in Louisiana for it to be a myth.

No one can make a blanket statement like they didn't buy any property here because they were using shell companies so no one would know.

Disney in Louisiana is a myth. There is no evidence outside pure speculation and rumor.

Listen the podcast business movers on Walt Disney. It gives a great deep dive into the subterfuge Walt employed in keeping the Florida location secret. St Louis was in contention, but was derailed over alcohol sales which was a demand of Anheauser-Busch who dominated the business scene in St Louis.
