he'd at least give you a choice...take the paddle or go two rounds with him with the boxing gloves

the smart kids took the paddle

All the way through high school.

We were often given the choice of suspension or licks. Best just to take your medicine, get it over with, and go back to class. By doing this your parents wouldn't find out, which, looking back seems shady.

Nonetheless, a day out of school, zeros for grades and a beating at home was a far worse fate than a couple of swats.

Man, we had an assistant principal named Mr Jack. He was an old black man and he had a purple paddle he called "purple reign".

If you got sent to Mr. Jack for doing something bad, you got the paddle. One year my classroom was close to his office and when he would paddle someone you would hear.. WAP!... kid starts crying.. WAP! more crying.. And depending on how bad it was.. you would get a third one... WAP! kid continued crying.. And he would send you back to class. If the kid would pass by our classroom and was crying, everybody would laugh at them... But not too loud. Since we were close to his office and could hear him paddling people all the time. that kept the class in line...

My dad use to let me pick out which belt he would use. He had like 30 different belts. I remember picking a skinny one the first time. Big mistake. It left welts. The next time I picked the biggest one he had. A little better.

Tons. Coaches and principals with wooden And glass paddles. Teachers spanked me. My parents were just fine with it.

Yes, but no holes, it was concave to cup the buttocks and maximize surface area contact.

Yeah. I think only maybe 3 times through elementary and middle school. I was a pretty good kid. Although, the licks might have had something to do with me being a good kid after middle school. That shite was brutal.

Parents got theirs afterwards too.

The ruler or your hand? You were talking while she was teaching a lesson on ambiguous sentences.

But to answer the question. I think I was in 4th grade. The teacher had to leave the classroom and told one of the students to write down the names of everyone who talked. My name was up there. Not sure why, there was probably more to it, but everyone one of us whose name was on the board got the paddle once. It was the principal. He didn't bring it like Mr. Jack so nobody cried.

Besides teachers and principal paddles, had a sixth grade teacher that used a big thick T-Square. Combine with a good golf swing and it was painful.

Yes got paddled in first grade and it had holes. There was the rumor they had an electric one if you were really bad.

Yes and it was called "The Board of Education".

Whipped or punished somehow.

There was still a consent form for paddling when I was a kid.

The real truth was that paddling was not common at that point, but boys could opt for either a paddling or detention. This was not offered to the girls. Messed up either way. I’d rather take a paddling than a Saturday detention.

Many times.

my 8th grade history teacher had the most menacing paddle of them all. It was a Louisville slugger with the barrel sawed in half vertically and sanded to a smooth surface. We were literally beaten with a baseball bat. As 8th graders we wore it as a badge of honor though, and kept a lick tally throughout the year

So, it was the opposite of a deterrent?

Yes but only one teacher really made it hurt.

Mr. Gooch, he'd try to knock you through the lockers. I should have gone back and beat his arse once I grew up.
