It doesn't have to be this way.
try it the other way........ run your own plot to feed your family for the rest of your life.

work those fields from sun up to sun down, having to have more kids just to help you. All for some winter to come in and kill everything and half your family dies because they starve.

Modern society isnt all that bad.

So what’s your solution?

Cant speak for the OP, but my solution was to semi-retire early, in my 40s, outside of America where my US dollar bills go 5-10x further than they did in America…. Not a perfect solution for everyone; im divorced no kids so it was ideal for me.. and there are trade-offs to living abroad.. but when i watch from afar the shitshow America is becoming, im glad to be out of “the greatest country in the world.” [tm]

Idk man, all I see on LinkedIn these days are these personal brand evangelists telling you to start your side hustle, eventually quit your job, forget the 401k/salary/benefits and work 5-10 hours a week make bank

It’s a sick system..

We are the most privileged group of people to ever walk the earth - pale Americans as well as Americans of color.

Life ain’t perfect and there is certainly ample room for improvement, but rarely do people look at the historical context that chiefly involved subjugation, famine, plague, war, slavery, etc etc for thousands of years.

We have it pretty great. Every generation has its challenges.

We've been lied to for generations.

We've been told to get a job with a good salary, benefits, and a 401k, so we did. Those of us who haven't done so yet are breaking our own mental stability trying to do so.

We've been told to climb the ladder, so we did. Those of us who haven't done this yet are busting our arse working harder and maybe even longer hours to do so. At the expense of our mental stability.

We've been told that it's normal to ask for permission to spend time with our kids, so that's what we do. Then we start calculating when we'll have that allotted time accrued back to do so again. Next year or months later.

We've been led to believe that taking some time for ourselves is called "recharging" so we can get back to the grind "with a fresh mind and/or clear vision" soon after.

We've been promised that a 9-6 or 8-5 or 8-4 is normal, and we're believing it.

I'm not saying that working in the modern world is perfect but I do chew on the idea that for pretty much all of human existence outside of the last century or two, humans have worked every day as much as possible. If they weren't building shelter, they were hunting food. If they had food, they needed to find water. If they had food and water, they were cutting wood for fire. If they weren't doing that, they were fighting rival tribes. If not busy with those things, they were doing something else. No days off. No air conditioning. No vacation. Work every single day to survive.

Is it utopia living in the modern world, no. But we do live in the richest and most comfortable period in human history.

There are people out there who you'd never realize, that have their own business and work less than 3 days a week and make millions.

Just depends on what type of business.

Yes you are, acknowledging the problem is the first step to solving it.

You are not alone

America was built on "The People", we have just forgotten this simple principle. One person has power only when multiplied by others, then you have an army.

Simplify America into 2 simple groups

Those with great power, wealth, and resources
&
The rest of us

1 vote is a grain of sand on a beach

350,000,000 votes is the beach

If you allow the elite to control the narrative they can stop any 1 person. If you have a UNITED states, they can no longer control. The key is to look at who is dividing us instead of uniting us. Turn the light on them and they scurry like cockroaches when you shine the light on them.

The key to the UNITED States of America is critical mass.

Rent you an RV, spend a long weekend at an RV park. You will see it, kids riding bikes, hanging out with other kids they just met, walking dogs, people greeting and helping their neighbors, sitting around a campfire, parents playing/fishing hanging out outside with kids, no electronics.

This is highly idealized. I spent several weeks staying in RV parks and campgrounds throughout WY and SD (and a couple other one-offs in states on the way to and from) a few summers ago. Sure, there was plenty of this, but there was also a shite ton of bored arse kids on their phones and parents happy to let them. There are also a significant amount of selfish, obnoxious, dirty people in these places.

This is true.

It's not easy and it requires a lot of luck and hard work, but people do it. There are even more people who try to do it and fail. The odds aren't in your favor.

But it does happen, and there's nothing stopping you, particularly in this country.

Look, I don't like the way the system is set up, but nobody "told" us to do this. It's just that there's an agreed upon time of the day that's used for work. If you want a normal, generally low stress job, that's when you work.

You have every opportunity go do something else. There are plenty of jobs where you can have more than that to yourself. You can work as a paramedic/emt/firefighter and work 24 hour shifts and have 4 days off.

You can work night shift jobs.

You can start your own business and work 3 days a week and not make as much money. You can reduce expenses and ride a bike. You can leave the country if you have the right skills.

I think the in general the system is bullshite, but there isn't some demonic presence lording over you controlling you. I don't think there's any virtue or point to being a victim like this. That's not to say to "pull yourself up". It's harder now than it has been, I agree with that, but what is the point of toiling in misery like this? The world is what it is, if you want to change it get into politics.

There may be a group of elite who generally sit at the top, but they are doing what they are doing to keep themselves rich, and the result of that is the system. It is not a setup of the system to keep others down so that those people can stay rich. It's the result, not the input.

exactly. OP is being a bitch.

aint nobody told you to do all that. its the career he choose. I used to be on the same path and realized, i dont give a frick about title or power so i pivoted to maximize the amount i make per hour worked.

he can do that too.

or go be poor, nobody gives a frick.

but until we reach the things point that Elon has talked about....then yea if you dont want to be poor, then go work.

all the other shite is irrelevant. We live in the most prosperous time in man kind in the most prosperous country in the world.....yet still some are not happy.

everyone cant be rich, everyone cant be the winner, there will be losers no matter the system.

again...OP, nobody gives a frick.

Feel you!

From the other side (recently early-retired…early b/c time > money! Aligned with your post’s sentiment).

I did the rat race for 30+ years. As W2 employee all my life, I signed up for it. Blessed to have worked for a good company, although it told me early and often that it was not loyal to me. Persevered and ended rat race…and it is glorious!

FWIW, my learnings:
- Financial freedom is real and possible! How? Live below your means.
Income - Investments = Expenses
Invest difference in cash generating assets (stocks, real estate).
Compounding cash will work harder for you than most people think. Start early. Make it automatic.
We always view investments as an army of soldiers fighting for our freedom along side our time in rat race.
Chit works! I promise.

Time is more valuable than money. Can always get more money. Not time. Longer you wait, guaranteed less for you when you get there. Don’t be the hardest / longest working person in the cemetery. Too many of those.

Family and health are ultra important. The end! Put these at the top always.

Hope AI will break the rat race as we know it. Until then, control your future.

Do (action plan) > Being done to.

Never known a dept with 4 days off like that, unless they were working 48 hr shifts. Anyhow, I'm retired in that field, burnout comes even quicker there than many other fields of work depending on the department.

So make a change? Control what you can control and strike out on your own. Take a risk to get out of the rat race.
