. I don't know why people call them hot water heaters. They aren't heating hot water.
Because they're what makes water hot.
TD is the first place I've seen this as being such a big deal. I use "water heater" and "hot water heater" . Just depends on what comes out and nobody has ever been confused as to what I'm talking about.

Hot water heater-upper to make your heated hot water hot with heat.

Then isn't also a hot water re-heater?

You can’t heat hot water. It’s a water heater.

Depends on the temp of the water going into the inlet I guess. If the water pipes are in the attic in summer the water going into the heater is probably hot water. This is an entirely stupid topic of discussion by the way.

A minor annoyance is an awful mistake?

I was a plumber while going to college. Water Heater is the answer on the plumbing test. A hot water heater is a water heater that takes already hot water and makes it hotter. (Like taking 120 degree water and heating to 140 for a commercial dish washer)

Technically, that is what some of them are advertised as. Or does he get upset that you don't specify it's a hose "water" pipe

Mine is heating hot water right now. It heats hot water several times a day. Why? Because long before the water becomes cool or even tepid a thermostat causes the burner to ignite to heat the hot water above the target temperature at which I wish to use hot water.
It almost never doesn't heat hot water.
So there. It's a hot water heater.

Don't forget that there are some with recirculation pumps that will return the water to compensate for heat loss during dwell time.

Here- let me add to your annoyance collection.
Lots of folks grew up calling refrigerators "ice boxes" because that's what their parents or grandparents were still calling them.

Your hot water system is basically a circulating loop. Granted the water in the return line to the water heater isn't a hot as the supply that left it. So technically it would be accurate to call it a warm water heater or a hot water re-heater.

I couldn't care less. I used to work at Home Depot and heard this dumb joke damn near every day. Everyone knows what you're talking about when you say hot water heater. Is it redundant? Yes. Do I really give a frick? No.

I’ve lost way too much sleep just thinking about all these new features. I give up.

It’s certainly heating hot water in my neighborhood at the moment.
