Was Huey Long shot by Weiss or was it a stray bullet from one of his body guards?

I have heard different stories about the shooting.

I don’t have any special knowledge of it, but I think it’s highly possible if not even likely that it was friendly fire.
The Weiss story always sounded weird too, but then again they all do.

My family always blamed the body guards. Allegedly Weiss shot at a snake the morning of the confrontation, thus the spent round in his gun. Weiss allegedly saved my grandmother (or her sister) when she was very little. Due to that the family always told the snake story and blamed the bodyguards. I doubt any of them were actually there to see it though. Take it for what it sounds like, family lore.

The last surviving witness was Julian Bailes, Sr. He was a law student working as a part time elevator operator in the capitol building and was holding the door when Long got shot. He later served as a judge in the 10th Louisiana Circuit.
Bailes' son and I have been friends since college. He was one of the two doctors who discovered and publicized CTE.
