re: Was Huey Long shot by Weiss or was it a stray bullet from one of his body guards?

Weiss had all the motive in the world to take that guy out.
Wasn't his supposed motive that Huey Long had somehow gotten his father-in-law replaced from a government position?
Doesn't sound like much of a motive to me. I can see not being happy about it. However, assassinating Huey Long and either getting killed or ruining your entire fricking life because of it?

Weiss himself was also a communist. The whole motivation for the killing is pretty vague, but it seems like Weiss thought that Long was attracting members away from even more explicitly communist groups.

History teacher in HS said none of bullets removed from his body matched the caliber of the gun Dr Weiss was carrying.
I did a report on HL in middle school for SS Fair. I seem to recall that in some of the books I read there were conspiracy theories surrounding his death and that FDR and HL's body guards were involved.
There is a biography by a former LSU professor that can give you some insight. I think the author is T Harry Williams but I'm going off a memory from 40 years ago so I'm probably wrong. That professor was supposed to be the expert on all things HL so if you are truly interested you may want to consider reading the book.

Huey’s bodyguard’s were sick of him doing the Buffalo Shuffle when confronted by disgruntled constituents. Weiss got in Huey’s face, Huey started shuffling, guards said, “f it” opened fire, Weiss got caught in the middle. It’s why Huey always wore dancing shoes.

Good point. That is certainly a possibility.

There is no conspiracy
In July associates of Huey had eavesdropped on a supposedly secret meeting in New Orleans. The discussion was of assassinating Huey, and a man was identified as “Dr. Wise,” to the gathering
Dr. Carl Weiss is now believed to be that man. His father-in-law (and a thorn in Huey's side) was gerrymandered out of his judgeship during a special session that started the day Long was shot. Weiss had spoke to Long twice before the bill was passed. The bill on the new districts was titled “House Bill Number One”. It was passed at 9:20 that night. Shortly after, Weiss confronted Huey for a third time
Weiss indeed shot Long in the abdomen. Long had one single bullet in him, Weiss died with 61 bullet wounds. Huey's bodyguards would have never had cause to fire their weapons in a very crowded space if Weiss had not fired first. Huey lived for 2 days after the incident, and spoke of the incident.
Eyewitness New Orleans Tribune reporter C.E. Frampton, who was present at the State Capitol that night: “Out of [a] number of reporters, I was the only one who was on the scene and actually saw the shooting, [Weiss] pulled his hand out from under his coat and fired point blank at Huey.”

Just glanced at Wikipedia on Weiss.
It is interesting that his body was exhumed in 1991 from Roselawn Cemetery and examined by a forensic scientist at George Washington University. Remains were apparently not reinterred at Roselawn.

Weiss supposedly had a .32 and the bullets extracted at OLOL were .45's They were immediately all confiscated and never seen again. His bodyguards carried .45's.
This was all from an old history prof.

From what I’ve learned over the years about historical events is what happened and what got put in the books are not the same. Sometimes just an oversight or too simplistic explanation but other times it’s just an outright lie.

There is a book called Accident and Deception: the Huey Long Shooting, which looks into this. Written by Donald Pavi, MD, who interviewed people including at least one former bodyguard of Long. It’s a good read if you’re interested in this.

I was researching this last year and the evidence seemed to tell a different story than Weiss shooting him.

The only hole in this theory is that Long was a deranged leftist himself.
Listen to some of Long's speeches on Youtube, then listen to Obama's. They say the same things.

He was shot in 1935. Do you think there are a lot of eyewitnesses posting on TigerDroppings?
Probably not, but it's a better chance than most that a person who goes by "UncleLester" has a higher chance of having been around then.

I was trolling. Not a serious post at all.
Yes, Huey could most certainly be considered a nutty Leftist politician by even today’s standards.

It’s time to fight back, that’s what Huey said
Two shots in the dark, now Huey’s dead
Pretty sure that’s about him

I worked at the Old State Capitol when the Long Assassination exhibit was installed in the 90s. I actually got to hold the gun Weiss allegedly used (with cotton gloves on and the archivist very close by
) . The archivist always asserted or at least seemed to believe that Weiss took a swing at Long and his jittery guards opened fire and Long was struck in the chaos that followed. There were theories that State police, when examining Weiss’ car, located the gun and it was planted or at least submitted as the weapon used. I don’t know about all of that. But it was interesting to hear all the different legends about the incident.
