Voters rejected a 1-cent sales tax in 2023 to give Livingston Parish teachers a raise

It sparked so much fury that many teachers didn't come to work that week out of protest. Many other school districts were watching the fate of that election to see if they would mirror their own similar proposals.
Jefferson Parish tried to raise property taxes in 2024 for teacher raises, which failed.
Now this week, Amendment 3 has failed, after a similar amendment failed last year (Amendment 2, March 2025) for teacher raises.
Sales tax failed, property tax failed, and paying down the teachers retirement system debt for a raise has failed twice.
What is a viable path for teachers to get a raise? Louisiana public school teachers rank 48th nationally in pay.

Quit taxing people to death and spending their tax money on completely wasted fraud or crap. If you eliminate the wasteful spending and fraud the teachers can get the raises needed.
BTW, my wife is a teacher. Our county went out and talked to people to approve a tax for schools. Guess what, the BOE went and hired bloated salaried staff at the BOE and didn't utilize the money for the schools or the teachers. Guess what, the next time they asked for money, they rejected any new or existing tax.

Maybe the 4-day school week getting embraced around the state should stop. If it costs all parents in the state more for someone to watch their kid or not work for those days, then I definitely don't want to give the teachers a raise for working less. There are very few times where there isn't a half day or whole day off of school within a two week time span as it is.

People are getting fed up and are not voting against their own financial interest anymore.
People vote for these new taxes and don’t see anything in return

The entire systems pay structure needs to be revamped… teachers want a raise… ok.. call out and demand that admin pay and numbers be reduced to start… the jig is up.. people have repeatedly told municipalities that they can no longer shoulder the burden of continued millage and sales tax hikes..

Maybe the government officials need to do more with the money they have instead of fricking wasting it and then asking for more to pay teachers. Inflation is up and people don’t want another damn tax because when they aren’t seeing a return on their existing taxes.

Get rid of all the fluff positions within public schools and use that money. Go back to a principal and vice principal.

I understand why nobody wants their taxes raised for any reason right now.
There are still (just barely) enough teachers willing to work for what they are currently paid, largely because teachers are motivated by non-financial factors to do what they do and many of them have spouses with higher paying jobs.
Teacher pay probably won't see a meaningful increase until the states absolutely have to raise it in order to preserve a minimally functioning school system.

paying down the teachers retirement system debt
Why is this system in the red? I guess teachers can start pulling money out when they retire? So some are getting retirement benefits for 30-35 years?
Set rate like S.S.or percentage of pay?
How about health insurance? What kind of rates do they pay, or does the school board continue to provide this?
I am not connected with this, so am curious to the rules.

I have always supported teachers, but the way they acted during COVID, I would not have voted for in favor of a raise either. I still don't think I would vote in favor of it.

There is only so much taxpayer money to go around. People are clearly sick of never ending increasing costs.

BESE has control of how the money from those three trusts are spent (Education Excellence Fund, Louisiana Education Quality Trust Fund & Louisiana Quality Education Support Fund). Maybe ask them why they aren't using that money for teacher pay?

Anyone that posted “be a hero, stay home” or “we are in this together” make me sick to my stomach

End teachers unions and let teachers get paid based on their merits. Better teachers will get paid more, shitty ones will get paid less and/or fired. Close failing schools to free up more funds.

Start spending the money you get wisely and cut the dead money and waste. Believe me, there is plenty absolute waste that can be cut and other creative ways to fund raises for teachers who deserve raises. Of course it will piss some off which is why fair and reasonable cuts rarely or made, but that needs to be done first.
Prove you can spend the money you have wisely before you get more.

It's a cake jobs, with cake benefits. 9 mos a year, and off at 3 pm
Your jobs are gonna become extremely pressured by advancing AI and video tech...to where we will reach an affordability measure, that makes innovation necessary, instead of just an option.
