What is a viable path for teachers to get a raise? Louisiana public school teachers rank 48th nationally in pay.

I have to pay $25k a year just to not get the services offered to me by EBR public schools. Why the hell would I want to pay more towards something I don't use?

No one in EBR is going to vote for more taxes regardless of what it is for. If you want more money, then you're going to have to take it from somewhere else within the govt budget and we can vote on that.
I suggest you take all that library money and COA money.

Wrong question.

Why would taxpayers choose to spend more money on this system?

There is a huge governmental credibility problem.

We are asked to spend greater amounts of money in an environment where taxes are already high. And this for a school system which we perceive as failing badly. We see the best students going to private schools at great cost.

So what is the point of investing in failing public school systems?

If you want to get more money, what is your plan to change the bleak outlook? You need to show people that there is some actual benefit to paying the ever increasing taxes.

And this is in a political environment where there are significant trust issues.

If we vote for a tax and it passes, then we see the money get shifted over to other projects which we did not want and do not agree with. Often what we voted for is then defunded from its old processes and then perpetually dependent on the new and often supposedly "temporary" tax.

Look at the larger trends. Our existing infrastructure is being neglected while the load is being irresponsibly increased through the building of new roads to nowhere which flood the area with more people while traffic is already a huge problem. Pay more taxes for more of this?

We see no responsible management taking place, but there is the constant new tax proposal - often on odd days so that tax increases can be slipped around the will of the populace on low turn out days.

It is time to pass a constitutional amendment to limit ALL tax proposals to once per year - on the first Tuesday of November and at no other time.

BOE went and hired bloated salaried staff at the BOE and didn't utilize the money for the schools or the teachers

Serious question, are public schools susceptible to the modern DEI type positions that are all bloat?

My wife is a teacher in LP.

Her W-2 last year was $46,000 without the stipends.

Amendment 3 was a chance to permanently give them the stipends without raising taxes.

The people of Louisiana are just stupid. They vote against anything they don't understand (taxes, amendments, etc). Guess what happens when investors (tax payers) don't invest in companies (government)?

Maybe when looking at that W2, your wife should ask why Livingston parish has been able to allocate about 25million dollars to building new sports facilities in the last few years?
Why every school has at least 4 assistant principals, all making 6 figures a year, while rank and file teachers are making half that?
Why the LPPS central office needs 200 employees with most of the higher ranks all related to the same 3 or 4 last names and all making over 6 figures?

People in the City of Denham Springs passed a tax to fund this.

Admins at schools are not making 6 figures. Check their pay schedule for confirmation if you don't believe me.

They have over 2,000 teachers and support staff. I understand the central office needs people in their maintenance and IT program to ensure continuity of basic business services.

The Superintendent makes about $220,000, which I am okay with because that is a worthy salary for someone managing 2,000+ employees and entire school system.

Why do they deserve a raise? If anything, the entire education system is massively overpaid.

Exactly, show us you can spend the money we are already giving you responsibly and then maybe you will have a chance. What you detail above - I can guarantee you only some of many examples.

Teachers aren’t teaching anymore. They give computer assignments and the ireadys are doing all the teaching.

My kids’ high school has FOUR assistant principals.

Part of that is because of the never ending onslaught of legal paperwork that comes with education.

We have an assistant principal whose sole job is to sit in 504 and IEP meetings and make sure the school is in compliance. That’s it. It’s a full time job.

Viable path.stop step raises and go completely merit based on student improvement and test scores. Principals should only be increased on school performance and that includes 75 percent of teachers earning merit increases
The good and best teachers will achieve.
School administration jobs will follow suit.
Move to a 401k system and end teachers pensions
Finally end TENURE.

BS argument. Someone has to be at the bottom of the pay scale. And Louisiana is, has, and always been at the bottom. We are right where we are supposed to be.

And all the athletic expansion at the other parish schools? The point of this was to point out that the system prioritized athletics over everything else first.

Maybe not all of them, but the majority are, that is a factual.

There's a lot of overpaid bloat in the central office. Maintenance and support are fine but there's only about 15 people in IT and about 30 people in Maintenance.
