Maybe it is because the fine arts/liberal arts attract that type of person and the "talent" pool doesn't leave much of a choice to draw from.
I graduated from Auburn in 2004. Started as an engineering major, graduated with a business degree. In all that time I had one professor (marketing) that wasn't a conservative. He joked that he was the college of business's token liberal.

I don't know how much you know about UT's forensic science program, but it is hardly useless and has set the standard for much of what is done in forensic science.
I am not standing up for the professor here, just the program.
