I've heard they fight like hell not to pay out.

I’ve been with USAA for over 40 years. We flooded back in 2016, and they were reaching out to me the next day, and sent an adjuster to the house within a couple of days. They could not have been any better at handling structure and contents distributions.

I don't need to know.

They are my HO and auto insurer.

If USAA is saving you that much, I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice to not check out other companies as well. I would also look at Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Progressive, and Farm Bureau. Better yet, see if you can find an independent agent and see what they can do. At least in Birmingham, USAA rates have been soaring but obviously SF is where you are. It's all a song a dance but if you play it right you really can save a lot of money by doing a little digging.

Didn't read through the entirey of this thread, so sorry if late...

But, USAA now provides Wind & Hail insurance if your home has at least a fortified roof (basic bronze). They used to only cover higher fortified roofs. I switched from AIUA and bundled my homeowner's with W&H. W&H quote was $2,200. AIUA was $2,875.

Plus, USAA's claim process is awesome as others have attested. They're a little pricey with auto insurance, but if you bundle all your insurance, the discounts are nice. Plus, their claim process for automobiles is flat out world-class.

They are way better than other insurers. Have had them for over 20 years. Rates are better than anyone else where we but I really like the service.

I legitimately feel like they have my back on protecting my property. Every claims experience has been great.

When we evacuated for Ida, they covered our living expenses without a declared state of emergency. I think only Allstate also voluntarily did this. It was also simple to get covered and there was not a daily limit on reimbursement. We rented a house on 30A to evacuate to and they covered it entirely, without question.

Curious….what did that message say?

this is what i got:

USAA: We see you may be in the path of a developing tropical system and care about your safety.

Please listen to local authorities and take steps now to help protect yourself, your loved ones and your property.

If able, secure outdoor items and move your vehicle under cover or away from low-lying areas prone to flooding.

35 year usaa member and only use them for banking now. They dropped many folks in Florida and their auto rates are not that great anymore

Customer service is very hit and miss now too. If you are saving a buck, cool, but they are not the member driven organization they once were

I have never filed a claim with them but I had them for Homeowners for a few years. After about year 3 their rates were significantly higher than the competition. But the first few years they were very competitive.

This. I figure I will wait 3 years and circle back.

I've had USAA for 30 years. It is the easiest claims process you will ever experience.

Switching away from SF will prove to be a mistake

They are great with claims. They used to be the cheapest around but no longer.

a quote from USAA that would save me over $2000 a year versus

You sure the quote is for a policy that covers wind & hail? I got a quote from USAA for a house in Gulf Shores. The quote was really cheap then the agent said we need to get an additional quote to cover wind & hail from our third party wind/hail provider which was an additional $15,000 per year.

THIS!

Read your policies carefully on all the exclusions. Especially wind/hail and roof related. Feed it into ChatGPT for an analysis.
Use an independent broker to shop the coverage on a regular basis. Carriers send out annual policy updates with fine print that they never tell you about.

I own a roofing company.

State Farm, Allstate and Travelers are the worst for roof claims and that is the #1 type of homeowner claims made.

I switched Auto from USAA because the premiums were too high, but still have Homeowners there. Getting a new roof 2-3 years ago was a pretty easy process, but that's the extent of my claims history for Homeowners.

Then you probably need to know.

I currently have SF for home and auto and after a recent auto claim I am looking to switch. They were simply awful to deal with.

I filed a lawsuit against them for refusing to pay Hurricane Ida damage. I know what to expect.

I hope you find something that suits you better

Had a tree fall on my house in the 2021 ice storm and they were very easy to deal with. That being said, I haven't really price checked them recently.

We had USAA for 25 years. Had lighting hit our house while we were on vacation in 2023. House burned down other than 2 outside walls. House was 1 year old. It took over 2 years of fighting to get them to total the house. They wanted to repair it, but no builder would touch it. Finally got an attorney and the state insurance commission involved. STILL are fighting over the contents portion of our claim.

It's been disappointing.

Added bonus is that they are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than most other insurers.

I use USAA because they have always been honest and straight with me. Plus, I have had zero issues with their customer service (I know that has not been the case for everyone).
They are not the cheapest option for me, though.
