I don't think the over ocean flight plans of commercial jetliners are structured with regard to minimizing overwater paths due to potential landing areas.
I read something a while back about this really long runway outside some little town in Newfoundland that the airlines all together insure is serviceable as the last chance/first chance landing site for transatlantic flights going out or coming in, and assumed that was part of the reason planes follow that route.

I guarantee you that United as well as all of the US Flag carriers have "speakers," fluent in the departure and destination language, working international flights, both gate agents and flight attendant
2. If you are guaranteeing it, what doe the speaker do, and why wasn't the speaker able to avoid this one?

French speaker. I guess either very bad or no English.
Charles de Gaulle is pretty explicable in any language. How many Cabin announcements are made...1 should have been in French, that's SOP. This is someone walking around with their head up their arse.

They are lucky as frick she was just a confused passenger who didn't speak English and not somebody who wanted to do actual harm to the plane.
Didn't think about that.
I mean, she got through security and had a boarding pass to get on A plane.

Yeah, but those ticket scanners go off if someone is boarding in the wrong class. Strange that it wouldn't flash a warning if someone was boarding the wrong flight.

Maybe this was her pilot???

Why would one be in French? She was not on a plane with a French destination. They don't make announcements in French for most flights within the US.

kind of self explanatory

the dumbass got on the wrong plane, no French speaker required from EWR-SFO, I also guarantee you, that if said dumbass was at the correct gate and the gate was changed, there were multiple PAs made, in both English and French, not only at the departure gate, but throughout the terminal, as is typical, I'm sure there is more to this than what is being reported

This is partially United's fault,
This is 100% United fault. There are kids that fly, people who dont speak english, drunk people drinking at bars before flights and a bunch of other scenarios. Under no circumstance should a person be allowed to board a flight without a legit ticket.

How did she get past the gate agent?

Nah, they share equal blame on this.

How the frick is that even possible for either party?
Her niece had to translate for her, so I would assume her language barrier was her issue, I just don't get what the frick was United's issue. I mean, wtf do the scanners fricking do? My understanding is that is in place to make sure passengers belong on that particular flight!
So now we should assume that any slapdick can board any United flight he wants as long as he has a boarding pass for United.

SO the woman didn't question when they said "Welcome to Flight 1234 with service to San Francisco" ?

My guess is that the boarding scanner made a noise similar to those for an exit row. At that point the gate agent probably just typed in the seat number and waved her through. What I'm curious about is normally they do a head count on flights, they clearly didn't here or else they would have known someone was on there that should not have been.
Obligatory "It's the pilot's fault for not announcing the flight routing from EWR to san francisco"

It quite literally is the Airlines job to know who is on their planes and to ensure the correct people are on the correct planes.
I'm not saying it's not the airlines fault, as they do have fault in this.
But i'll blame the idiot who can't follow simple directions more.
Thousands of people board planes everyday that don't speak the language in which announcements are made, yet they all seem to find a way onto the right plane more often than not. If you get on a plane that isn't going where you're wanting to go, it's your own fault and you're an idiot.

Im not even talking about this 1 situation. In general, this should not be allowed.

I can tell you all of the Trans-Atlantic & Trans-Pacific flights I've taken, the paths for them didn't look like they cared about staying over land.
I flew ATL-Narita (Tokyo) non-stop once and the plane's path took it over the Pacific off the Oregon Coast.

Flew on a United flight last night. We were delayed because of a mechanical issue. Sat on the tarmac for over an hour. It took multiple attempts for the maintenance crew to fix the issue (air conditioning).
It was the closest thing to being in North Korea that I'll ever experience. We sat there in silence.
We all wanted to complain but were too afraid for getting our arse beaten.
