The effort is impressive, but no one is reading all that.

I’m glad to know that H-E-B really is superior.
To your question - from my experience,
H-E-B just decided one day they were going to kick arse, and made some major changes.
My take is that the plan began with having the best produce and meat departments in Texas, compared to Kroger and Randall’s. They sort of built up a following based on that. So people would shop at their locals for the basics, but go to H-E-B for those specific items that were both cheaper and superior quality.
Then they expanded and people shopped there for everything.
Eventually, they got more aggressive and actively took out other smaller local competition such as Fiesta in Houston. That store on W. Alabama was built directly across from a Fiesta, which shut down shortly after.
Now they challenge the competition anywhere. Kroger had definitely the Buffalo Speedway location and H-E-B moved right across the street.
Central Market has been open a long time, and competes with Whole Foods.

Friend,
At what location would you consider the flagship Rouses Supermarket?

This was a masterpiece of a thread and review and I question the intelligence and class of anyone who has a problem with it.
Thank you, friend.

While I wish I could have visited every single store, I did not have the time nor did Mother allow me to use her car any longer for road trips.
Best line in the whole review.

I have twice weekly trips to HEB over the last 20 years. and it is a well run store, with the major competition being Walmart grocery. HEB has really cleaned out the competition. I really hate the membership style store found elsewhere that grossly penalize a non member pricing

I can accept everything you said except this:
Excellent troll job snuck into the middle of what would be a rational post otherwise.

The much ballyhooed subs at Publix fail for me. I tried two and both times I thought Subway made a better sub.

1. HEB, 2. Rouses, 3. Publix (not impressed with this store at all. Maybe because I went to one in the Miami area)

Not finding this at the Rouses. How do you score that?

Rouses currently is constructing a new location for its store that was closest to the original Ciro’s which laid the groundwork for Rouses Supermarkets that was built on West Main in Bayou Cane near Southland Mall. You could conceivably call that the Flagship store.
That store was featured in many early Rouses TV commercials and local cooking segments.
Rouses then upped the ante in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s by building its Epicurean layout stores in the Houma- Thibodaux area before expanding it to the Northshore. Those stores won several awards for their layout and design. The first one of these was the one off of Canal in Thibodaux.
As Rouses expanded outside of the Houma-Thibodaux area it grew by buying other smaller chains. It mainly adopted those formats. Newer stores would have a more traditional layout instead of the Epicurean design, but they did create stores with new features like a Mongolian Grill and other amenities located together on one side the store. Heck one in Mobile even has a cooking demonstration area.

Friend,
I would like to see your reviews of the local family owned grocery stores of NOLA. Like Dorignacs, Langensteins, Zappardos, Breaux Mart, Robert's, etc.

I rate Rouses above HEB.

I am happy to say it took leas than 30 seconds to scan all that. Publix is our go to, Rouses has too much of a badly renovated A&P feel, no HEBs in the area.

Word on the street is HEB is buying Rouses.
