I have to say I agree with these ratings. Especially the abysmal Publix. Having lived a while in GA, the only place Publix excelled, it was because their main competition came from the even more abysmal Kroger.

Having lived near HEB and Rouses and shopped at Publix a good bit in FL, I agree with your assessment.
At the end of the day, HEB is king and I’m glad I live near one.

TulaneLSU’s analysis is spot on here. Would love to see this translated into Louisiana’s impressive indie grocer scene.
New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas in particular are stacked when it comes to independent grocery stores. Most go out of AG in Baton Rouge.
I’m a big fan of Alexander’s off Highland. Dorignac’s in Metairie is also damn solid, as is Calandro’s.
Hi Nabor is okay. They’ve been around forever. I think it’s employee owned now.

Having been quite busy the last few days, I have not previously had the time to reply to your many lovely and thoughtful comments. Let me first begin by discussing the random pricing between the three groceries. I was shocked to see the difference between Publix and H-E-B. The complaints everyone hears about Publix being overpriced are not overstated. H-E-B's 15 item total was $67.12 compared to the same items at Publix costing $87.86. Rouses was smack in the middle at $74.42. Publix is clean and has nice staff and nice grocery baskets, but it should not be 30% more than H-E-B nor 18% more than Rouses. This pricing to me seems more like price gouging and profiteering due to having a de facto monopoly in Florida groceries.
Friends of the first page, please respond with posts that have useful content. It behooves no one to have to read empty posts. I am tasking you with working hard on becoming better contributors to the OT.
Napoleon, it is ever so good to see you posting. Reading your near death experiences this past weekend reminds me to give thanks to our God for people like you. I have never had the opportunity to shop in Giant, but I do love Safeway. Safeway has always had excellent house Signature Select red sauces. For some reason, I always associated Sureway in Grand Isle with Safeway, but I am pretty sure they are not related.
Obtuse1, the only thing I would do with a rapier would beat it into a ploughshare. In fact, when I was bequeathed a antique rifle by a deceased family member, I destroyed it with a grinder to ensure that there would be one less weapon in this world.
Yellerhammer, Publix subs, in my opinion are near the bottom of subs. I consider myself quite the authority on subs, with my Platonic version of the sub Casa Della Mozzarella's The Casa. When it comes to chain subs, I would rank them like this:

The obsession some people have with Publix subs is unjustifiable in my opinion. The chicken tender sub, for instance, is horrific, a violent explosion of bread and breading, as parched as the Sahara, not even a quart of their overly sweet honey mustard sauce can hydrate it.
With regards to their deli subs, there is this belief that because they use Boars Head it is superior. Boards Head has acceptable quality, but to treat it like it is head and shoulders above other sandwich meats is silly. It furthers exemplifies how Americans are so easily and blindly beholden to brands.
BigBinBR, Publix's bakery is squarely last in comparison to H-E-B and Rouses. It is not a bad bakery by any stretch, but the other two are much better, from cookies and cakes to cannoli. Publix birthday cakes, for instance, are insufferably sweet and boring. H-E-B's deli is also significantly better than Publix. H-E-B carries every single Boars Head item Publix does, plus two other brands, plus their house roasted meats. Publix does not cook deli meats in-house. Rouses, likewise, roasts deli meats in-house, and thus, has a superior deli compared to Publix.
Delacroix22, the more I thought about Publix, the more I realized it lacked an identity and culture, except the culture of having no culture. Perhaps that is why people who love Publix go overboard on their subs. They have to cling to something that Publix does that many grocery stores do not, and so they boast of the sub line.
FriscoTiger, as you can see in the picture, I tried both vanilla and caramel pecan turtle. I strongly hold to the opinion that Publix has significantly better ice cream than H-E-B. Publix ice cream is the best mass produced ice cream I have ever had, save perhaps Baskin Robbin.
LRB1967, we could do rotations through the grocery stores. If you plan the trip, I am sure we could get several hundred to come.

rltiger, I hope that is not the case. The uniformization of America continues as corporate takeovers get bigger and bigger. It would be nice to have perhaps one H-E-B and one Publix in the New Orleans Metro, but I would not trade Rouses out and out for H-E-B. Community variability is very important with our groceries.

CharlesLSU, my time is most valuable and I have very little free time. I try to sleep, but beyond three hours a night, I cannot because I awake with new ideas and plans for how I will achieve my greatest task.
BigBill, I too like Cannata's, although, I am not terribly fond of their snickerdoodle king cake. They have an excellent, and I mean truly excellent bakery. Houma is blessed to have it. The hot foods at lunch are superb!
Sao, there is a salsa at H-E-B for every palate. It really is impressive. I did not count the number at Central Market, but I suspect it might be even more than 109.
SirWinston, Trader Joe's is acceptable for a few premade items. It has also done a fantastic job in upscale, young urban neighborhoods to gain a loyal following by destroying the environment with fancy packaging that is wholly unnecessary, but appeals to this "environmentally conscious" subset. The same people who shop at Trader Joe's also love the national meal delivery services that are horrible for our environment and destroy local culture and businesses. One of the few things I enjoy at Trader Joe's is the premade soup.

AGGIES, Fiesta is another stellar grocery. Houston has some of the best groceries in America. I was most impressed and Fiesta is part of that winning formula. The best tres leches cake I have ever had was from Fiesta, and some of the best tacos in Houston are found in some of the deli/bakery section of some Fiestas.
Lester Earl, what a great question. I have never considered it. I have always been partial to the Mid-City Rouses, which has improved drastically the last few years. It is spotless, bright, friendly, and in the morning a pure pleasure through which to walk. I have never been to any of the Rouses in Thibodaux where it was founded or the Northshore where many say an excellent one is. Which one do you consider Rouses flagship?

It is essential that we create avenues that expand the written word and photography while diminishing the power moving pictures have in our culture. Never expect from me videos.

jerseyfla, of all the Rouses I visited, there is only one Rouses worse than the one in Daphne: the one on Williams and Vintage in Kenner. Publix is doing their best to win over the hearts of Alabama. Even though its Daphne location is father from distribution centers, thus it has higher costs, the Daphne Publix has prices that are 3-5% cheaper than their Florida locations. The only explanation for this is they are trying to win the Alabama Rouses-Publix war. But if Publix wins, and Rouses leaves Alabama, expect Publix prices to rise there too. Publix seems to sneak in, woo with bright lights and good service, shut down the competition, and finally inflate grocery prices to absurd levels.
The Publix locations in Daphne, both Gulf Breeze locations, and two Pensacola locations were all built in the last ten years and none was an Albertson's. I do not know if the 9th Avenue Publix was a former Albertson's or not, but it likely is older than ten years. Four of the Publix I included, though, are less than six years ago. I have shopped at several Publix in Orlando and Tampa, and found the experience similar to the one I experienced on the Panhandle.
As for Walmart not being a real grocery store, why not? They have excellent produce and their offerings are immense. 28% of groceries in America last year were purchased in Walmart. Their Great Value line is exceptional and at a discount beyond any other grocery. Many people dislike the brand, but in a blind review of their products and prices, I think you will be hard pressed to compares unfavorably with Publix.
I too can name five subs better than Subway. And I can do even more that are better than Publix.
billjamin, next time I am in Houston, I will let you know and we can do a tour through your H-E-B.
Pettifogger, since when is Publix a Christian organization? I do know that for over a decade, Publix has refused to sign the Fair Food Program. Even Walmart has signed this pledge which ensures that its growers are treated in a fair, justice and loving way. H-E-B and Bucee's are nothing alike.

Jake88, my job is service to the world. Rouses crawfish, BTW, have been excellent in my experience. I have had them from CBD NOLA, MidCity NOLA, Power Metairie, Uptown NOLA, Clearview Metairie, and Orange Beach Rouses locations.
GumboPot, a grocery store that sells alcohol loses points in my personal scale. Alcohol is the world's deadliest drug. It deserves to be banned from public and private life. The days of Prohibition were some of the best in American history. Pray that one day we can bring back Prohibition.
Twenty 49, the comments are not mutually exclusive. I have been working on this formula for years and years. For this rating, I had to fine tune it, a process that took 20 hours.

bayouvette, yes, Rouses serves boiled crawfish in the Spring. People here have said that H-E-B does also. Rouses crawfish, when I have gotten it, has been excellent. And it is also sold at commercial prices. Boiled crawfish for $2/lb in these days is really eye-catching. I do not know how much or how good H-E-B's crawfish are, but I cannot imagine they would compete with Rouses. Rouses probably does deserve a bonus point for the crawfish, but alas.

BayouENGR, my system, like the BCS in 2003, calculated a winner; I did not choose. We must be fair and scientific when we are comparing similar things. The Economical has really grabbed the bull by the horns with their renovations. I wonder if they are also planning on expanding. Its deli and bakery now are A+.
TejasHorn, to be compared to Tolstoy is a high compliment indeed, but it is also entirely undeserved.

Cold Cous Cous, Mr. Lind has always been an Uptown blueblood. I wonder if he has ever shopped for groceries at the Tchoup Walmart. I doubt it. He's Arabella Langestein's and Magazine Whole Foods through and through.
St.Augustine, I have shared in the original posts my system. By objective measures, the two chains, Rouses and Publix, when compared, are ordered just as I have typed them. When we compare the two within a system, Rouses wins. I would suggest you compare the two in an objective fashion and share with us your results.
dewster, I have shopped at Mariano's both before the Kroger's takeover and after it. It was a very good grocery, though a bit expensive. I really enjoyed their kale smoothies and getting oysters at the oyster bar in one of the downtown locations. I may need to make a trip to Chicago to rate and score it so we can see how it would rate against these three giants. Based on my memory, I would expect it to fall between H-E-B and Rouses.

Pettifogger, since when is Publix a Christian organization? I do know that for over a decade, Publix has refused to sign the Fair Food Program. Even Walmart has signed this pledge which ensures that its growers are treated in a fair, justice and loving way. H-E-B and Bucee's are nothing alike.

Jake88, my job is service to the world. Rouses crawfish, BTW, have been excellent in my experience. I have had them from CBD NOLA, MidCity NOLA, Power Metairie, Uptown NOLA, Clearview Metairie, and Orange Beach Rouses locations.
GumboPot, a grocery store that sells alcohol loses points in my personal scale. Alcohol is the world's deadliest drug. It deserves to be banned from public and private life. The days of Prohibition were some of the best in American history. Pray that one day we can bring back Prohibition.
Twenty 49, the comments are not mutually exclusive. I have been working on this formula for years and years. For this rating, I had to fine tune it, a process that took 20 hours.

bayouvette, yes, Rouses serves boiled crawfish in the Spring. People here have said that H-E-B does also. Rouses crawfish, when I have gotten it, has been excellent. And it is also sold at commercial prices. Boiled crawfish for $2/lb in these days is really eye-catching. I do not know how much or how good H-E-B's crawfish are, but I cannot imagine they would compete with Rouses. Rouses probably does deserve a bonus point for the crawfish, but alas.

BayouENGR, my system, like the BCS in 2003, calculated a winner; I did not choose. We must be fair and scientific when we are comparing similar things. The Economical has really grabbed the bull by the horns with their renovations. I wonder if they are also planning on expanding. Its deli and bakery now are A+.
TejasHorn, to be compared to Tolstoy is a high compliment indeed, but it is also entirely undeserved.

Cold Cous Cous, Mr. Lind has always been an Uptown blueblood. I wonder if he has ever shopped for groceries at the Tchoup Walmart. I doubt it. He's Arabella Langestein's and Magazine Whole Foods through and through.
St.Augustine, I have shared in the original posts my system. By objective measures, the two chains, Rouses and Publix, when compared, are ordered just as I have typed them. When we compare the two within a system, Rouses wins. I would suggest you compare the two in an objective fashion and share with us your results.
dewster, I have shopped at Mariano's both before the Kroger's takeover and after it. It was a very good grocery, though a bit expensive. I really enjoyed their kale smoothies and getting oysters at the oyster bar in one of the downtown locations. I may need to make a trip to Chicago to rate and score it so we can see how it would rate against these three giants. Based on my memory, I would expect it to fall between H-E-B and Rouses.

Legion of Doom, an excellent suggestion. I will work on fine tuning the rating system. Although I never have used a grocery store restroom, I can see how this component might factor into other peoples' views on grocery stores, thus, making it a valid inclusion category.
ELVIS U, Aldi is okay. They get a lot of hand-me-downs from Trader Joe's. I remember visiting an Aldi's-Trader Joe's combo store on N Clybourn in Chicago, not far from Alinea, and thinking all the spoiled fruit Aldi's was trying to sell was just dated leftovers from Trader Joe's.
