BikeShare stations are coming soon to downtown, Southern University and LSU.

The Baton Rouge Metro Council voted Wednesday to start a public-private partnership to help pay for the program, which will bring 500 bikes to each location. The city-parish is getting a federal grant to pay for 80 percent — or about $592,904 — of the BikeShare costs, while the Metro Council agreed that City Hall will pay the remaining 20 percent.

The city-parish will call for proposals from private companies willing to sponsor BikeShare. Though the Metro Council eventually voted unanimously to invest in the BikeShare program, the discussion surrounding whether to do so grew lengthy and heated.

quote:

But others wondered why local government should invest its money into a BikeShare program and questioned the Baton Rouge Area Foundation's influence over it. BRAF paid for a Baton Rouge BikeShare study and created the Baton Rouge BikeShare nonprofit.

quote:

But Councilwoman Chauna Banks asked whether the BikeShare program would spur the high crime rates in Baton Rouge, and asked whether having bikes on college campuses would lead to vandalism. She slammed BRAF's involvement in BikeShare and said she would not fall for the "dangling carrot" of including bikes at Southern University.

"A true philanthroper (sic) is not about building themselves and being capitalist," Banks said. "The richer BRAF becomes, the poorer the northern part of the parish becomes."

WTF?

Someone didn't cut her in on the bribery money.

That program will be a disaster and a waste of money by the city-parish. BR is not a biking city.

She asked good questions for the wrong reasons.

We don't have enough cops, and we can't do permits and inspections; however, we are going to start another program.

Makes no sense.

You don't have to bike to downtown or Southern from LSU. The point is so people can bike around the campuses or downtown.

It's going to look like 500 people in NBR will be getting new bikes.

I'm curious as to why the city had to fund this at all. In dallas there are three private businesses that are bike shares. These bikes are all over and you unlock them with an app and pay to rent them.

So she's afraid that black people will start stealing the bikes at Southern, making them all look bad?

I'm pretty sure that's what she really means

I don't know enough about it to be for or against it, but this is a fricking stupid argument-
quote:

Councilwoman Tara Wicker said having a BikeShare program in Baton Rouge will likely pay for itself because of its ability to lower healthcare costs in a city known for indulgent food.

And this fricker just wanted to brag-
quote:

And Councilman Buddy Amoroso said having a BikeShare could bring more tourists into Baton Rouge, using himself as an example of someone who has traveled cross-country to go on bike rides.

quote:

Baton Rouge recreation and parks commission continues work on a trail system throughout the parish
They better be paved trails if they're talking about these bikes-

quote:

But Councilwoman Chauna Banks asked whether the BikeShare program would spur the high crime rates in Baton Rouge, and asked whether having bikes on college campuses would lead to vandalism.
Surely there's some mechanism for "checking out" the bikes that requires ID or a credit card?

quote:

[Banks] slammed BRAF's involvement in BikeShare and said she would not fall for the "dangling carrot" of including bikes at Southern University. "A true philanthroper (sic) is not about building themselves and being capitalist," Banks said. "The richer BRAF becomes, the poorer the northern part of the parish becomes."
Translation- if I gotta be poor, then so does you.

Absolutely. This has already happened in Baltimore, where they had to shut the program down due to so many thefts.

You would think that 600k could be better spent than a bike program that you know is gonna be a massive failure.

If I'm reading that correctly, she thinks that black people having bikes will lead to property damage and crime. That's about as racist as it gets.

Only in BR would the residents think promoting biking and bike trails are a bad thing. Also bitch when 80% is paid by a fed grant.

It's not biking promotion that people are bitching about. It's the total waste of money that it really is. We both know that this is going to be a complete boondoggle.
