NO had a lot going for it in 1960, and what happened in the past 50+ years determined much of what we see today.
Nola's failures go way back.
1933 - public works department created the Emergency Housint corporation
1934 - National housing act of '34
1937 - US Housing Autority was created.
And so on and so on... this is the time period you created these huge arse projects in the urban centers.
1944 and the next couple decades during and post war you had the Serviceman Readjustment Act (GI bill)
1947 - Congress est the Housing and Home financing agency
-The VA, HOLO, FHA
-'exclusionary covenants' were written into title deeds and r al estate neighborhood redlining.
-suburban expansion post-war took off while many blacks in the south were effectively barred from homeownership.
-in the race to the burbs, business and manufacturing followed the middle class
Leaving these massive projects like the St Thomas and Desire to turn into breeding grounds for the poor.
New Orleans was on the forefront of all this meddling by the federal government into housing and what we have now is the end result.
None of this will be reversed over night. But seeing how the vicious cycle was started and perpetuated is the only way to find a way out of this decay.
I don't think government policy to fix government policy is the way to go.
I have family that lived here in public housing at this time period and have heard stories of the drastic change/complete 180 that happend in some instances less than a decade.

So no thread on the denham girl that got murdered?
I see it both ways on here actually.
The statues thing is a big deal and is fresh. That's what I'm getting at. When there was big national news happening in br, the talk was centered there.
The flood? That didn't happen in Nola. It was a big news story, so br was in the headlines.

Race is just a tool by some there to get leverage.
-isms have become the go to tool of the left to gain leverage. I hate to politicize that, but there's no other way to say it. When two people have a difference of opinion, and one uses the "you're just an -ist " argument, then you've completely stifled any chance at compromise. The other side will spend the rest of their time trying to prove they aren't an -ist and the question will never be answered. And people will agree to things they know is wrong to avoid that label.
We're the statues causing a racial divide in the community? No they were not. I don't ever remember hearing anything about them until Mitch stated talking about it. But you can damn sure believe that racial discourse now exists because of them. See how that works?

These progressives moving there should get involved in community politics, however they will stay there 10-years then move to the north shore and work some city government jobs.

New Orleans residents are sensitive to criticism.

Everyone knows why the city is the way it is.
You can say what you mean. It's the black people.
But I've been all around the country. Why is it worse in Nola than almost anywhere else? If you notice, it's also usually in cities with high corruption and a bad racial history. New Orleans and Chicago are perfect examples.
When did black schools finally get provided equal funds and learning opportunities as white schools? In the 60s, when there were coloreds only bathrooms and water fountains? Probably much, much later. At best, in the 90s. In New Orleans, probably after Katrina.
You take a bunch of uneducated people, that don't trust any authority, and pack them into a small area. Regardless of race, there's going to be a shitload of crime. Having a huge tourism industry just makes going down a violent criminal path that much more enticing to someone uneducated.
I'm definitely more understanding of racist things I've heard said from people in a Arabi versus the rural Appalachians. But if you think race is the only issue, then you're either dramatically uninformed or just a fool.

We had a good run when Jim Letten was the U.S. Attorney. He was actually proactive and making a real difference with regards to corruption. That's why he had to go
Well Kenneth Polite has been just as competent, I don't get your point. Polite has been phenomenal

At our place of business the sidewalk is broken up a bit. What does the city want us to do? Fix it. Fix public property.

there was a thread that got deleted regarding a pretty white girl who was potentially involved in sex work. let me know the next time someone starts a thread because there's a plank rd. armed robbery. there's an OT thread revolving around girls being mean to each other at a New Orleans pool.

I've yet to meet a resident that doesnt admit the cities faults..... just try to not be so damn reactive to the overzealous, overblown hyperbole..... (ex. The gravy chambers BR shite)

NO isn't for everyone, and it's hard to quantify to those what it is about the city that does grab you. But I've also moved away half a dozen times over the years and every time I somehow ended up back in the city.
This uniqueness of this city will always give off the aurora to the ones that 'get it' and will just refuse to give up on the city because they know the alternative because they have experienced other places that just aren't NO.
Yep. I've always thought I was wired a little differently than the average person. I think the fact that is even consider moving back, let alone crave it, proves that fact.

For whatever reason, SS, I don't hear as much about him. I guess Letten was going after Mayor Nagin, so that was big-time. In addition, I don't listen to WWL or any other talk radio beyond a few moments in the car.
In those pre-and post Katrina years, I was listening to a lot more of that stuff, but there's no one on I really like or trust anymore. Garland is corrupt, Scoot is an uneducated reed blowing in the wind. Kaare Johnson went in the tank for Obama in 2007, and was no longer "ob-JECK-tive" as he CONSTANTLY proclaims himself to be.
For me, there's no where to get decent, balanced, socio-political discussion, and I don't pursue it as I once did.
If you don't mind, please elaborate for me and give me some good news about Polite. Lord knows we need to hear some good things happening with regards to political corruption in South Louisiana.

Zach Lee to amp hill is literally doing just that. But, but, leave Nola alone. Why not start a thread about baton rouge? If he would read, there are plenty of them every day.
That's what I'm talking about. Head in the sand, well this stuff happens other places, let's talk about them instead of trying to fix the city.

FWIW, Polite quit with the rest of the USAs and I don't believe anyone has been appointed per usual with Trump.

I'd say defensive would be the better description. People bitch about plenty of things about the city. But they'll defend it till the end.
