I live in BR, but I care what happens to New Orleans. Now I could be in the minority, but if people in La. don't think NO is important to the state and the overall good of the people then they aren't thinking logically.

The fact is we are all in the same boat, we all need the state to be run better, and our cities and towns to follow suit.

I have never understood why as a rule govt. doesn't properly fund and operate the basic services they are to provide, and then if things are good and the city, town or state is prospering then fund the extras.

If you don't have good police, fire, garbage pick up, water, etc. then you can't have a good city; yet too many of these politicians come up with these different things which in reality are done to help their buddies and basic services go by the way side.

A better New Orleans is better for La.

You do realize that if you all would stop shooting each other it would make the government's job a lot easier.

Everyone is looking at this from a big government standpoint. "You (the government) fix our problems and then we'll behave." When it should the other way around.

all of this, but you have idiot Louisianians calling to boycott the city over fricking statues as if New Orleans isn't, for better or worse, the economic engine of the state.

if it isn't about statues, it's about something else. politicians didn't want to make payments to Benson to help keep the Saints, as if having an NFL team in New Orleans isn't a prestige issue for the city. how shitty was the superdome pre-katrina? Louisiana politicians shite on New Orleans as a rule, and then wonder why the city isn't better.

Yea, the people that are concerned about the city are the ones shooting each other up.

The government causes the fricking issues and buys votes of the uneducated violent tpos's. Wash, rinse, repeat. You've been told many times in this thread.

It's a pretty damn tiny segment of the population doing a huge amount of violent crime.

I'd be confident in saying that we could take 15 of the most violent criminals off the streets and have the vast majority of violent crime cease.

There are jus those select few people that have zero regard for human life. Your average 'thug' isn't built like this.

i think that our most violent criminals have a higher body count than the most violent criminals in other violent cities for sure. but i also think a tremendous amount of people get killed in New Orleans for incredibly stupid reasons.

i think i read a story the other day about a guy who got killed because he owed another guy $10.

Wow, that's a great idea. Maybe Mitch should simply ask all the criminals in New Orleans to stop being criminals. I'm going to email my old Criminology professors from undergrad and ask why we didn't cover that specific criminal indicator. We wasted all that time studying poverty, education, etc. levels when all it really took was someone to ask nicely.

Man, I think you've stumbled upon the solution.

But as an outsider looking in, it seems to me that New Orleans has never funded and built up a top notch police department. It's been corrupt for a long time. It's been undermanned and poorly led.

Agreed, I just read an article where it stated homicide detectives were forced to work extra details for Mardis Gras and taking down the monuments. Where does that seem like a good idea to pull detectives in that area to work b.s. duties? They are already way understaffed, only solve 1/4 murders, and it's one of the glaring problems in New Orleans.

I could easily sum up the biggest crime problem in NOLA with 1 word. But I don't want to get banned.

yes, and this guy that pulled the tigger probably has a body count behind him a mile long. He has zero regards for life.

I wouldn't doubt the nopd has a good idea who these guys are, they just don't have the resources I build a case. It all snowballs when the public is scared to testify do to them seeing the terrible conviction rate. The CDC is fubar'd, again the leadership is broken.

I know tLSU has talked on here before about the handful of residents doing the majority of violent crime.

If there were actual consequences to the shooters then they would. Only 1 in 4 murders is solved, I'd hate to see the statistics for how often a shooting that doesn't end in death is solved.

I've stayed out of the statue thing because I see it as a local issue. I can see both sides of the argument, but in the grand scheme of things is symbolism over substance.

As for Benson, he's become extremely wealthy due to the benefits the state has provided. That can not be denied. He's leveraged the city's love for the Saints for all its worth.

I think many overstate by a large amount just how beneficial an NFL team is to the overall economy. It's more like a bragging right than a huge benefit in the grand scheme of things.

But you need to look in the mirror. Why doesn't NO have better cops? Why are the finances in such bad shape. I'm talking basic services here brother. The state isn't supposed to fund police, fire, etc. even though the state puts their own cops there to supplement the city police.

La. politicians don't dis New Orleans, NO has powerful friends in BR. NO needs to take care of their people better, to fund police, fire, sewer, water, and etc. Orleans Parish is smaller than EBR in population, and is surrounded by a larger metropolitan area, and has millions of tourists coming through their city, the Saints, Bourbon Street, a great restaurant business, and the list goes on and on.

Why is it they can't fund city services?

People like you are part of the problem. The minute someone breaks this into an 'us vs them' problem and not as a community as a whole, then solutions will never come to fruition. That's how these leaders end up in office as is.
