Base delivery on Doordash is $2.50 to $4.50 depending on distance. The average is $3.00. Then the driver has to deduct gas and depreciation from that $3 and hope the customer leaves a decent tip. That's why a driver will pass on an order with a crappy tip. If you want someone to bring your food to you, give them a reasonable tip. Don't expect someone else to do work for you for free. They aren't employed by the delivery platforms, they are independent contractors. They ain't making shite from the platforms, drivers rely on tips.

I'm not paying 30% for someone for someone to hand me a bag of food. Especially on top of delivery fees.
Really now
I mean, he's technically doing a shite ton more for you than a waiter does.

Half those restaurant websites seem to expect a tip (usually starting at 15%) even when you are picking up your own order. Absolutely ridiculous

We ordered Digulio's to-go using their new website today. Very slick mobile website. But It had the same thing, 15%, 20%,& Other tip amount. I selected "other" because I always tip $3 on to-go orders from sit-down restaurants.

I have a friend who makes a killing on the weekend door dashing in the upscale Chicago suburbs from places like Fleming’s, sometimes gets 30 dollar tips and frequently delivers to professional athletes.

On a food delivery, I tip $7 no matter what the meal cost is. The delivery driver does the exact same amount of work for $100 worth of food and he/she doesn’t for $10 worth of food. Walk in, grab bag, drive to my house. The order total doesn’t matter one bit.

And if anyone says the drivers don’t make much money, they are obviously making enough to keep working there. You can find a job anywhere today, so there’s no reason for them to stay if they aren’t making money.

The better the tip the more likely your food is to arrive hot and on time. I wouldn't tip on a % of the order basis, I would tip on a time and distance basis. 1-2 miles away, not busy, not wait can be a lower tip than 10 miles away, lunch rush, busy restaurant with good food but poor customer service and long wait times, you need to tip big.

Drivers just pass over no and low tip orders and you end up getting someone that can't speak English who is running 3 apps on 3 phones picking up every order they can, stacking them in their car letting them get cold while he delivers to others before you get yours.

Decent enough cheap eats, no tipping...and free boxing at participating locations. What's not to like?

Some drivers do make good money, especially those in big cities where the geographic area is more compact and customers tip better. Drivers can be more discerning in which deliveries they accept. In smaller cities the delivery area is more spread out, and people don't tip as well. Those who make good money make it off of tips not the platform.

Just give them whatever you feel like. The calculated percentages are just suggestions, of course they are going to be high. I usually tip high because as someone who has worked similar jobs, I know how shitty people tip.

Inflation has made everything go up including labor. It’ll never come back down. You can thank outrageous amounts of funny money being pumped into the economy and shutdowns for that.

I've handled the togo business at the restaurant where I work since the pandemic started, so I feel like I've got a pretty solid perspective on this subject.

First off 3rd party delivery services are trash, and you generally overpay for everything. In some instances you pay extra for things that some restaurants don't charge for. As an example, before we cut ties with all third party services door dash was charging customers something like a dollar for extra salad dressings and dipping sauces despite the fact that they would get them free from us. Secondly, if there is any issue with your food, you're stuck dealing with the delivery service and not directly with the restaurant

In regards to tipping, I generally average anywhere between 10 to 13 percent, but I'm also paid a solid hourly wage as well. All in all I do really well for myself on a daily basis. I do enjoy getting 20 or 30 percent and there are a lot of generous people out there who take care of me like that, but I'm not gonna be mad at 10 percent. That shite adds up quick when you're slinging 100+ togo orders a day out the door. Don't be a dick though and leave zero

I've noticed places like subway and salad station asking for tips now. The salad station employees don't even do anything to serve your food. Like what am I tipping for?

Yea the tipping on to go food is pretty absurd.

Let's say you order a fancy $50 steak and it takes driver A 10 minutes to bring it to you. The next day you order a $20 hamburger and it takes driver B 10 minutes to bring it to you. So tipping means driver A is providing a higher value service? It confusing since they are essentially both bringing food.

From personal experience, as a casual driver, Uber Eats pays the most followed by GrubHub. Waitr is pitiful and I rarely even turn the app on anymore. They absolutely have to be skimming tips. I can get two nearly identical orders from Waitr and the other two and Waitr is always $3-5 less for the driver. I find it hard to believe that only tight wads and no tippers are using Waitr.
In my area, it’s hard to get $2 a mile. $1-1.50 is about average. It’s a good way to make fishing money. I average about $20 an hour after gas. I haven’t had to file taxes yet but I track all of my mileage, so we will see how it turns out.
