Maybe the whole point of this may be to realize that other institutions have their shite together and the PPE issues are not as widespread as we would be led to believe. I bet the "stockpiles" of your PPE have been depleted for some time now while the director of your hospital got a nice Christmas bonus for leading your facility to a profitable year.

Any lack of PPE, is solely the fault/responsibility of your employer/administrator.

I'm sure it does vary greatly system to system. However, most places run pretty lean and just didn't have a plan for this.
And what's funny is our administration has practically sealed themselves off from the actual hospital. Pretty easy to tell people to re-use PPE when you never even get close to the patients.

Well you see there is this little problem about a lot of the single use PPE, a lot is made in this country called China, and they are going through some shite right now

The nurses I know are going to work, and the only complaints I see from them is that hospital administrators are not providing appropriate protective gear.
They are are being required tonre-use gowns, something that would have gotten them fired three weeks ago.
They are having to use and reuse surgical masks because the few remaining n95s are reserved for docs who spend far less time with patients.
Thousands of nurses are going to end up sick because hospital admins are changing guidelines to make more money and leaving nurses to fend for themselves.
I know I'll get downvoted into oblivion for posting this truth, but it does not change that it is the truth.

It's not really that they're trying to make more money. It's just that they weren't prepared and are now trying to find any shortcut they can to make things work. Why wouldn't they, it's not their arse on the line.
It just goes to show hospitals and health systems are run by bean counters who wouldn't have a fricking clue how to take care of a patient or what equipment and skills are needed to do so.

I would be depressed if I only made 80k working in a hospital with 15 years experience. Obviously school nurses and those that work in clinics tend to make less.
Try closer to 6 figures out here, easily over 6 figures with overtime.

My mom was a nurse. She said she made close to 100k towards the end of her career. This is in Louisiana so I'd imagine pay is higher in more expensive places to live.
