A hired gun or contract travel work will get you more money, if you play the taxes right. However you have zero protection. Something goes wrong and you're gone. Instantly. A union would get your closer to that than non-union and have much more protection against administration. There's pros and cons to both.

Yeah there is no strict guidelines about pregnant HCWs and COVID-19. All I've seen just say they should avoid taking care of those patients if at all possible.


Glad her unit supports her not taking care of those patients.

I did 35 years as an RN,31 years in ICU.One reason I went into was because I knew I would never have trouble getting a job.One problem is nursing schools don’t really prepare students for the realities of the job.There are a lot of downsides to being a nurse that hit you in the face once you’re out of school.Students tend to be idealistic and thay’re idealism gets destroyed in short order.
Our hospital underwent a merger in the late 90’s and the job became oppressive.Money became the focus,not the patients.They cut out our ancillary personnel,we typically were short on equipment to care for patients.The mantra became “do more with less”.
At the same time the hospital was doing elaborate expansion trying to make the hospital look like a 5 star hotel.
Patients became more difficult with several co-morbities each,not to mention the multitude of 300-400 lb. patients.I saw several really bright,hardworking nurses quit because they couldn’t handle the physical aspects of the job.A 110 -125 lb. woman can’t handle 300 lb. plus patients but they cut out the orderlies to help turn and pull up patients.
My last 2 years I never got more than 1 lunch break every 5 days,my shoulders were breaking down (I slept in lounge chair at home).
The straw that broke it for me was the electronics medical records,the computer became more important than the patient.The patient could be lying in shite but the computer entries better be up to date.
Thank goodness I was a saver and investor,I was able to walk away when I couldn’t handle it anymore.
