Arpa-E was established by Obama's stimulus plan in 2009 to conduct research and speed along transformation into cleaner energy technologies. Well done, Barack!
9 trillion dollars later, and we finally have something to brag about.
Way to go Barack!! You da man.

The US Dept. of Energy has beaten Bill Gates and Elon Musk to the holy grail.
Well, Elon would not be where he is either without the shite ton of government subsidies his company gets.

The argument here is should govt stay out of the innovation business. I believe gov't should be a partner in the conversation helping to drive advanced research.
I used to feel this way as well.
Now I'm a researcher with a little over 5 years at a private company that works almost solely with DoD outfits. It's not always a good thing when the Army, Navy, Air Force, MDA, etc. become nothing more than facilitators and paper pushers to private companies.
Private companies aren't nearly the super heroes this thread is painting them out to be. And I say this while working for one.

I've got news for you. The U.S. government has been doing battery research for decades.
quote:LINK Lawrence Livermore was not the only government facility doing battery research.
Battery research at Livermore Laboratory started in the 1970s with aluminum-air batteries, as part of DOE's electrical storage program.

Federal and state funding for basic research is absolutely essential in many fields. Its hard to convince a private company to pony up dollars towards basic research that may or may not yield profitable results. So many people dont understand this and question why government funds are needed in research.

Most people don't mind R&D from the gov. Excessive regulations and excessive budgets are the main reasons people hate federal agencies.

quote:This is true. My father was a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1964 until he retired in 1993. His area of expertise was diagnosing particles generated at high energy levels.
The govt gets big shite done...just will cost 5x as much. America is a great country, the greatest even, and I never doubt our ability to innovate.
The advances that were made at Lawrence Livermore in diagnosing high speed particles were instrumental in the eventual development of improved x-ray machines, MRIs and CAT scanning devices. Private enterprises built those devices by applying the innovations made by government scientists.

Exactly.
The carbon monoxide scrubbers developed by NASA for use in the space program were marketed and sold by Penske Racing.
