The US Dept. of Energy has beaten Bill Gates and Elon Musk to the holy grail.

Who says that government agencies are inept?
A US government agency says it has attained the “holy grail” of energy – the next-generation system of battery storage, that has has been hotly pursued by the likes of Bill Gates and Elon Musk.
Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (Arpa-E) – a branch of the Department of Energy – says it achieved its breakthrough technology in seven years.
This next generation battery could change our entire energy grid within the next five to ten years.

Wow, so much detail on the technology side of things.
I'm gonna say 99% chance of this being complete and utter bullshite.
ETA: Also, the accomplishments they're claiming are so incredibly vague that they don't mean anything.

The govt gets big shite done...just will cost 5x as much. America is a great country, the greatest even, and I never doubt our ability to innovate.

Arpa-E was founded in 2009 under Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan to fund early stage research into the generation and storage of energy.
Such projects, or so-called moonshots, were widely seen as too risky for regular investors, but – if they succeed – could potentially be game-changing.
Many of the projects fostered by the agency were already in sight of getting funding, Williams said. Several have now secured private sector follow-on funding. Others are being taken up by the State Department or the Pentagon, she said.
Yeah, it's bullshite.

Would you care to give three more innovations that our government has accomplished without the help of private companies?

Arpa-E was established by Obama's stimulus plan in 2009 to conduct research and speed along transformation into cleaner energy technologies. Well done, Barack!

Was hoping to read examples of how things will be different. Even as simple as "new batteries will last 10x longer". None.

There's this wonderful thing called Google... search for NASA's innovations to start.

You think NASAs innovations had no private help?
Part of the reason NASA is such a great agency is precisely because of how many private contracts and companies they are involved with

This. Boeing and NASA. Do some research.
ETA: Also, I re-read that article and it gave no cost associated to this find. It points out how much private industry has committed but never gave the governments figures.

I wish people like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Manoj Bhargava were the type of people willing to run the country. Get all the old dumb fricks out of office and let smart people take control.

I didnt make any distinction between govt or private companies. I just said America. I think private companies are best 99% of the time although I'm not sure things like the interstate highway system could have been accomplished without the Fed overseeing the entire project.

How amazing that this is coming out right before election time! Must be a coincidence, like when the site you linked bought voters registration lists in 2004 and paid people to write letters and make phone calls to people on the list telling them how horrible of a president that W was. I'm sure there is no bias and the timing of the article has no political bias at all.

The fed may offer the funds but private companies research, design, budget, plan, pour concrete, etc. for most interstate highways.
My post was mostly targeted at the OP.
