There's this wonderful thing called Google... search for NASA's innovations to start.
Every single part of every spacecraft NASA has flown was built by a private company. 95% of the time when a article uses the phrase "NASA engineers or scientist" they are actually talking about private contractors under NASA management.

The fed may offer the funds but private companies research, design, budget, plan, pour concrete, etc. for most interstate highways.
I know. Hard core libertarians will argue for completely free market with zero govt involvement and private everything. I don't see how something like the interstate highway system would have been put together without federal govt driving the vision.

Nice detail.
I'm sure if the government developed it it will cost billions to recreate so it wont be viable in the real market.

BS...NASA employs some of the finest engineers and physicists.
I do agree however that govt cannot do it alone
NASA is one of the greatest examples of a successful public-private program

Yeah, it was sadly lacking any specific information. It was a fluff piece.

The US Dept. of Energy has beaten Bill Gates and Elon Musk to the holy grail and will charge US citizens and corporations out the arse to use the new technology. There is a great chance it will never be released to the public.

I'm going to make a plea on behalf of Rex that the down-vote bullying stops. How long must this smallish,doggie-costumed man with the reliably cartoonish opinions suffer under the oppressive bullying of The Chicken Family of Message Boards? Just because you all aren't universally loathed and reviled doesn't mean you shouldn't sympathize with the universally loathed and reviled. When we meet a man with leprosy spouting nonsensical garbage about shite nobody cares about, do we mock him or do we help him? Oh, The humanity.
I for one, will not participate in this horrendous societal shunning and shaming. I draw the line here.

Would you care to give three more innovations that our government has accomplished without the help of private companies?
It kind of goes both ways. They have propped each other up in a lot of developments. The Internet, which was originally supposed to be a survivable way for the military to communicate during the Cold War, is one example.
American company or American government, we aren't perfect but we have a lot to be proud of.

The argument here is should govt stay out of the innovation business. I believe gov't should be a partner in the conversation helping to drive advanced research.
Federal grants for private efforts both in academia and enterprise are an invaluable asset in driving innovation. The area of DNA research is a good example.
Agreed this article is a fluff piece

No velcro?
NASA didn't invent Velcro or Teflon, and the Cochlear implant is a controversial issue because researchers had developed several variations of it long before the NASA engineer started working on his design. The NASA patent is confined to a unique aspect of that design only, and is a exaggeration for them to claim invention of the implant.
