really don't see the point of a watch or at least an expensive one that doesn't do anything but tell the same time you can get from anywhere else.

You keep telling yourself the Seamaster is better looking than the Submariner or GMT, lol. There is a reason you attempted to buy the Rolex first.

I went into Rolex first because it was closest to where I parked. I also went in knowing the game and that I wouldn’t be able to buy what I wanted. I went in to get on the waitlist.
I went into Omega with no intention of buying one, but wanted to look. I put on the one I bought and immediately knew it was the watch for me. Yes, I like the way it looks better than any Rolex I’ve ever had on my wrist.

The Rolex is a classic and clean design, but also a bit dated. The Omega diver is a more modern design in my opinion.

One of my hobbies is building mod watches. I’ve got a boat load of watches and my favorites that I wear are based on Omega designs.

Rolex is arguably the most overrated watch brand around...

That is Rolex's most valuable asset. Its name/brand.
In my opinion they are damaging their brand with their tactics.

I like Omega watches, hell, I like all nice watches, even including Timex of which I have several. I probably came off a bit harsh in my comment. Too many times I have seen guys throw shade at Rolex watches when it is obvious there is something else going on.

Enjoy your watch.

For a watch nerd, sure. Watch nerds likely make up nearly zero of fheir customer base. I think the average rolex buyer likes the exclusivity, whether real or artificial doesnt matter.

I’ve always thought it bad business if you have people wanting to buy your products and they can’t for a myriad of reasons like artificial scarcity, or even real scarcity. I guess it works for them, but I’d hate to leave any money on the table

Guess nobody remembers when Montblanc pens were sold at Sam's Club and Office Depot. I'm sure they thought selling to every swinging dick with some spare cash would benefit the bottom line but it destroyed their brand image.

Hard to be dated when the very design sets the bar for what a modern wristwatch looks like. I get that they aren't edgy in design and that their design philosophy is one of glacial evolution and advancement of materials more than revolutionary change in design language, but that is what makes the brand great to me. Reminds me of Porsche. The design DNA is unmistakable across the board and pretty much unbroken from its early days to present day.

I'm probably as much of a Rolex devotee as anyone on this board and the brand has been the focus of my interest in watches and watch collecting as long as I could afford a luxury watch. I love the fact that I can give my adult kids a watch to mark a momentous occasion that is 30-40 years old, still looks and wears fantastic and functions as well as the day it came off of the line.

I won't touch my modern Omega movements because of the finicky oiling parameters for their coaxial movements.

Who would you send an Omega coaxial chronograph to? I have one from about 2009 that I dropped on a tile floor and the counterweight fell off. I had it reattached by a local but it's still not right.

Simpleton, they did have it in stock. It was literally on my wrist for about 15 minutes. They probably had one in the safe too, but that’s the Rolex game.

They have them. I think they give the subs, Daytonas, gmts to grey market dealers almost exclusively. The common man ofc the streets pays retail for the less desirable watches that are selling under retail on the grey market…..just happy to have a Rolex and establish a history, right? Meanwhile you’ve paid 2000 too much for a watch you didn’t really want and that dealer just sold two subs to a guy that’ll mark them up 4,000 and then let that AD use his condo in Costa Rica next month.

The problem is that it didn’t really produce “exclusivity” in as much as it just drove the prices of their more popular watches up. You can go buy anything you want at any time.

Nesbit's in Seattle
Al at Archer Watch, but it is in Canada. I probably would only use him for restoration work now due to the watch crossing the border twice.

Omega is always an option but will be more expensive.

The rotor falling off is an odd failure due to a drop, I am assuming it is a Omega 3113 movement. The rotor is screwed on, in this case, a single central screw if the drop knocked it off it was almost certainly loose or it may have damaged the central pivot on the rotor bridge. An unsecured rotor can cause other issues. In any event at 17 years old it is definitely due for a service. Even if it had one service is is probably due for the second.

Good luck, I am sure you will get sorted.

That would be the market driving those prices. More popular = more demand = higher price. Rolex may make about a million watches per year, but that's across a large variety of models and styles and there are always more buyers available than watches. You want a Bruce Wayne? Well so do a few thousand other buyers, AD's are only allotted so much inventory so you either get on a list and wait or, if you have a good relationship with an AD they will see what they can do. Don't want to wait and are willing to pay above MSRP? Go grey market but you better understand there are fakes out there.

GenZ can’t read cursive, much less an analogue watch. I wonder what will happen to the industry in 30 years when Gen X starts to die off.

My future grandkids will open my drawer one day after my passing and have to ask someone what they are.

Must be why they are losing money hand over fist! I can't wait until the market catches up with them and punishes them for their arrogance. Should be declaring bankruptcy any day due to this insane business model.
