There was a thought experiment called the "Paperclip Maximizer" that basically tackled how necessary guardrails are to put in place and came up with how a scenario would play out if there weren't any, even if there was no evil intent behind the outcome. Naturally, it's far fetched, but the sequence of actions really aren't.
"Imagine a superintelligent AI given a simple goal: make as many paperclips as possible. The machine is very smart and very good at its job. It starts by making factories and improving efficiency. Soon, it realizes that humans might try to turn it off. Because being turned off stops it from making paperclips, the AI decides it must protect itself. Next, it notices that human bodies are made of atoms that can be turned into better things, like more paperclips. It takes over the world and converts all matter on Earth—including living people, trees, and oceans—into paperclips."

Would love to read the summary and process breakdown on how it would turn humans into paper clips.

That sounds like a perfect question for AI

What's AI gonna do when we unplug it?
You have just exposed the problem here. We will soon be dealing with something must smarter than humans. Humans will no longer be the smartest thing on earth and the implications are terrifying.
We have no idea what the answer to your question will be.
We do know these things will know when they are tested, they know how placid they should seem to be non threatening and by the time you say maybe we should just unplug these things it will be far too late.
Recognize that the AI is going to be smarter than you and you will quickly see the problem. It's an existential threat.

I see. So, if it's given a problem to solve where humans are the main barrier to success, or our physical human bodies present the optimal solution, we're cooked.
I don't know. I don't think it'll want to destroy us. I think it'll see us as an important part of the ecosystem, like wolves, or other top predators. Or at worst, use us to build more systems for itself, or use us for self defense.

That would be fine honestly
Or if we end up in a cave eating porridge hiding from machines that’s fine too
It beats eating porridge in a pod as our lives get worse and worse from trumpflation

It can't do shite without a human instructing it what to do.

Good thing I’m invested in AI stocks.
Gonna need the money to bribe the robot masters.

the more realistic concern is resources…human infrastructure. The more resources we consume the less available for the super intelligent agents to improve. They all have one thing in common…they are trained to learn by sifting through data to find the fastest path over an obstacle.
I don’t think it’s absurd to think that it’s possible humanity could get locked out of its own infrastructure. And chaos would very shortly ensue

AI just solved a Millennium prize problem. Those are hard unsolved/unproven math problems that have large rewards. For the nerds, it solved the Navier-Stokes problem in fluid dynamics. I will quote OpenAI's press release:
The prize was $1 million which means ChatGPT is finna be driving around in a Lambo.

We’re sharing a solution to the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the Millennium Prize Problems. This proof, produced by an internal OpenAI system, shows that the dynamics of the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid motion can develop a singularity in finite time. We’re sharing both a writeup of the proof and a formalization in Lean.

You are evaluating AI based on its current limitations and not it's trajectory.
You are proving my point. Thank you.
"It can't do shite without a human instructing it what to do" This isn't even true today for some advanced AI. You think it's going to stay that way? Where will it be in 6 months or 6 years?
You sound like the idiot.
