My work has emailed me at least three times in the past two days strongly encouraging us to get the flu shot. I work in tech so i'm not in the medical field. Today they're not only offering the shot free but Publix is offering a $10 gift card to get the shot. Is it just me or is it weird how hard they're pushing the flu vaccine? How strong is the evidence? I've never had one and never gotten the flu. after asking around friends, family, and coworkers, surprisingly they are in the same boat. I'm not anti-vaccine per se, however is this necessary?

Having the flu sucks. The vaccine is at best 50% effective. There is literally no harm in at least getting the vaccination and giving yourself that 50% chance

$10 is 12 miller lites. for 12 miller lites you could inject me with whatever vaccine you want.

you will get as many people here having your experience as you do people telling you to get the vacc.

What can it hurt to get it? On the other hand, why get the shot if you don't need it?

It's safe, and I think it has a 50% -ish seasonal effectiveness rating. I think the strains this year are supposed to be pretty nasty.

The reason your work is pushing it is because it's a good investment on their part. They'd rather have everyone vaccinated vs employees out on sick time.

Because there are people who can't get the shot who are most at risk if they get the flu. That's kinda how herd immunity works.

The insurance we have here basically requires us to get it. They come in a few times during the fall and offer them. You get like a 20% (i believe) discount on your rate over the year if you get it. So you will get it or pay out the arse if you don't.

Do you realize how much money companies lose due to employee illness?

Screw them for wanting a workforce that's flu resistant.

Everyone in my household but me got the vaccine last year.

Everyone but me got the flu.

So for that reason, I'm out .

Yeah yeah yeah, I know it's dumb.

If everyone else would get vaccinated, then I wouldn't have to worry about getting the damn shot.

The only time I've ever gotten the flu was immediately after taking the vaccine

You hears the stories like this all the time. Yes, some people flat out do not get the flu very often if at all. Some people are more susceptible to the flu. It is what it is.

Also the flu vaccine is not always correct. If it is wrong you are no less likely to get the flu than someone who didn't get the shot. Research has Proven, that those who get the flu vaccine, even if they get the flu, symptoms will be much less.

No reason not to get the flu vaccine. I get it for the lesser systems in the event I do get the flu.

is this necessary

The flu can murder you to death. It murdered 80,000 Americans to death last year and every year, it puts hundreds of thousands of people in the hospital. The flu shot is not perfect, but it can help prevent you from being murdered to death or hospitalized by the flu.

Your call.

You do know that the flu vaccine take about 2 weeks to become effecting, right?

You would have gotten the flu regardless.
