Last year's flu that kicked everyone's butt was not covered in the 2017 shot.

I need to see some improvement in the CDC's guesswork before I get one again.

Because the negatives of getting the flu shot were?

They usually work somewhat well. There is absolutely no reason to not get it unless a doctor says you're not healthy enough to receive.

People who think they get the flu from the flu shot should be sterilized. We need to weed them out of the gene pool.

Here's another one. Yeah, it's likely you had the flu. It's more likely that you had a bad cold and think you had the flu.

But apparently not even bridge builders can grasp such a simple concept.

If what I had was low grade then the “ real flu “ would have killed me. Maybe it was just “symptoms”. I don’t really want to prompt the symptoms. Having the symptoms was hell.

Wouldn't just allowing yourself to catch the flu be the same thing as getting a shot?

I mean im 32, I normally get rid of any viral bug in 24-72 hours.

I want the antibodies...

For healthy people only: Are we just now arguing semantics on how we actually get these antibodies?

Edit: Not being a jackass actually trying to learn something today lol

No...getting the flu this year won’t protect you for next year.

Also....it’s not just about you. It’s about the people you come in contact with. Some of them may be fragile enough that catching the flu could potentially kill them(ex: children, immune compromised, elderly). And they could catch it from you.

They don’t make us all at work get the flu shot just so we don’t miss work(I mean it is part of it but not main reason)....they don’t want us accidentally spreading the flu to our patients. You can be spreading the flu before you even realize you have the flu.

How strong is the evidence?

Strong enough that they are offering it free and being aggressive about making sure you get a flu shot.

I use to be all "I don't need the flu shot" but then I realized.. It's not fun to have the flu, it could really cause problems for some people, and while it might protect from certain strains, anything is better than nothing.

It takes all of 3 seconds to get a shot.. So why not just get it?

By saying I know how to read the CDC website you took that to mean I think I am a super nurse?

Guess reading comprehension isn’t needed for building bridges.

I’m just passionate about vaccines and hate when people spread the same false bullshite around about why they won’t just get a fricking flu shot.

Not how it works. If the flu shot contains the flu that you contract, it will either completely prevent symptoms or greatly reduce them.

Say you get the flu without the flu shot for those antibodies you talk about. Those won't help you next year, so it was pointless for you to be miserable.

ETA:

And nurse is right, it helps prevent the spread of it to people that can't handle the flu as well as you.

And trust me, the flu is miserable. Absolutely miserable.

Isn't that the same for a vaccine though?

A fair statement that I didn't think about. I appreciate that.

Why aren't you busy continuing to make sure that hospitals are the most dangerous places on earth for deadly diseases? That seems like it would be a full time job, seeing how so many people almost die from infectious diseases they catch in hospitals.

I'll continue on with my record of never getting a flu shot, and never having the flu. You can keep preaching how the flu shots are needed, yet everyone is still getting sick

Right, but what if its a different strain? Does it not help me then?

I'm confused how you're confused.

You don't have to battle flu symptoms from a flu shot and it reduces the chances of you getting the flu greatly. If you still get the flu, it reduces the symptoms.
