Some poor decisions create externalities, even if the act itself has no clear victim. I've seen enough Montana geezers spend their SS checks sitting in front of a reel machine every day to reconsider my stance on at least some forms of gambling.

That’s fairly well put. I somewhat agree with gambling regulation. Gambling addictions can make people do some stupid shite, like steal from other people. Its very common in embezzlement situations

ETA: I suppose I support regulations around proving the funds belong to you, and community property needing consent. I don’t gamble, but think I should be able to -so I think others should be able to as well. But I have witnessed horror stories. Business owners and spouses should always review their statements.

These are stressful times. I can imagine that those with addictions are maxing it out on any escapism they can find.

Agree 100%

As long as their broke asses don’t vote for “free healthcare” and universal basic income.

These are the same people saying they can’t afford to raise a family but they are blowing money every weekend on the game.

Even with bookies it is all online.

You think people are still calling in bets in 2024?

Weekend of Bengals Super Bowl, deposited $50 to get the maximum free bets.

Struck out on all the bets I made, got 5x $50 bets for my trouble.

Hit a wild (but reasonable) 3 leg soccer parlay with the last of those and won $1900.

Put $1800 in my bank account, still playing off the remaining $100.

I guess they thought I would keep chasing the dragon, but I'm doing it 150% for entertainment.

60% of the time, it works every time.

That's precious.

That is how Louisiana sold the lottery to its residents 30 years ago. We still have the worst schools and roads in the nation.

Agree with this, I enjoy gambling but the absolute degeneracy of my friends and people on this board is Exh A for the counter argument.

I have no issue with legalized sports gambling - I do have an issue with the seemingly unending volume of advertising for sports gambling sites, apps and services.

But again, that’s just something I’m tired of seeing whenever I watch anything on any channel at any time.

Friend,

Just as wise governments of and by the people have classified society-destroying drugs like heroin and cocaine as illegal, so too should wise governments for and by the people strike down gambling. Make this leech on society illegal once again, as our great forefathers like The Revd Benjamin Palmer and Governor Murphy Foster did in great service to the people, saving the easily influenced masses from self ruin.

Yours,

Unfortunately that's not the way the government thinks, but there's plenty of politicians getting their pockets lined in some way or they wouldn't of started passing laws to allow what should've already been allowed.

What's perplexing is that, given the upvote/downvote ratio, just a few short days ago the overwhelming majority of this echo chamber was saying the exact opposite of the gist of your valid point regarding the Australian government fining and imprisoning parents and their under-16 year old children if they found a way onto social media and sent a heart emoji to their crush, and how we should totally do that here and that a good small government conservative would totally agree or he's a communist.

Both are identical in relation to your point, but alas, it'll take another generation before we can finally rid our collective conscience of "the way of the Boomer" mentality.

Make no mistake, some liverspot, state level, "small government conservative" will take a stab at trying to outlaw it again, but that cat is out of the bag. Just like with any other law they pass, un-passing it is a near impossibility.

I hate the Atlantic but they aren't wrong here. There is a reason this shite used to be illegal. Sports gambling is especially pernicious because it also bleeds over into the sport itself and causes all sorts of frickery.

I don't have a problem with things like Poker where there is an element of skill. At least the gambler has some control over the outcome. (I don't include black jack because Vegas has made it impossible to win these days).

Research done by the state of Nevada?

They fought the expansion of sports betting for decades.
