Government is too greedy for that

The reality is simple.. to live in a free society we have to let people do things that are destructive if they don’t control themselves. This isn’t the same as heroin bc while obviously addictive, you can’t die instantaneously from placing a wager. I am ok with stop loss laws that many casinos employ voluntarily

To someone who actually clicked on the article(not giving The Atlantic clicks), why is legalized sports gambling worse that illegal sports gambling? Are they making an argument that it's better to have gangsters in charge of books as opposed to publicly traded companies?

I don't know that you can say it was "better" when sports betting was illegal, but I can definitely see how legalizing sports betting has lead to a lot more people being addicted to it. It used to be that if you wanted to sports bet you had to get involved with some shady dude running a book out of a gas station or you had to physically drive to a sports book to place your bets. That's something not a ton of people are going to do, at least not with regularity. But when it's as simple as just pulling out your phone and putting money down? A lot of people are willing to do that.

Hell, I have tons of friends who only gambled here or there prior to legalization in Louisiana who now put down tons of bets every Saturday and Sunday. Are they winning or losing or betting more than they can afford? I don't know, it's not my business. But the number of friends/acquaintances/co-workers I know who regularly bet has exploded over the last 5 years and the math says they can't all be winning at it.

That said, I'm not saying it should be banned or anything. Personal responsibility and all that. But it's easy to see why it's a much bigger problem now than it was in the past.

I do not bet on sports. But if I did, I would not bet on LSU or Saints games. Too much emotion involved.

The gaming industry dose not lose money. It's not called gambling because there is no gambling taking place. You are granteed to lose more than you win. If by same chance you win more than your share...you will be banned.

I think when something previously illegal suddenly becomes legal - theres a splash period where everyone jumps in feet first bc of the novelty of it. It'll prob even itself out.

Also, it's early in the football season. Recreational gamblers lose their arse every football season. Most people will give it up before the season is even over.

"increases the risk that a household goes bankrupt by 25-30%"
- "leads to a roughly 9% increase in intimate-partner violence"

One can hope Jimmy Ott gets caught up in this so maybe he will disappear from 104.5

Agreed.

Freedom is a fantastic thing…when you have the freedom to fail and the rest of society doesn’t save your arse when you fall.

We don’t have that.

Also, do not believe due to "The Atlantic"...

Is it shocking to find out that people get addicted to gambling and risk money they can’t afford risking? Is it shocking thar making it much easier to gamble increases the number of people adversely affected by it?

They have but it used to be way more difficult to do it. Now you can do it sitting on the can at 2am in the morning.
