If I could get a free vehicle I'd seriously consider a hybrid. Save money on gas without having to waste time charging.

Currently own a hybrid and would never go back to ICE. Fun to drive with its vastly increased torque while getting 40-45mpg over the course of a tank.

Bought a Toyota hybrid recently and it's amazing. Great gas mileage for day to day in city driving, still has 400+ mile range for longer trips on a single tank, no need to charge anything.

If I didn't go on extended hunting trips in rural areas a lot I would have one. Until the charging gets faster and more locations pop up I'm holding off.

Wife just got one of the new Tesla models - bucket seats, extra space etc. We will always own a gas vehicle but for the women, and really important for elderly, the full self driving is a game changer. Just an incredible technology and takes a lot off mom’s plate mentally. They’re cool cars as well.

Will be definitely getting an EV for the wife when it’s time in the next 1-2 years. It’s a no brainer if you’re just driving around town.

Since they don’t make the S plaid anymore I’ll probably buy the scout SUV when I throw my MP3 in the trash. Will get more for recycling that than what I would get on trade for. Tesla with 200k miles on it

I’m referring to the cars themselves. Getting into the costs of ownership gets complicated, as while EVs do depreciate a bit faster, they have vastly lower maintenance and fuel costs, which generally balances that out, at a minimum.

But like I said, that gets complicated, and is beyond the scope of what I meant by my last post

I forget how much it cost but I think it was a few thousand dollars to have em electrician install the high speed charger at my house which you really need to have. That was an added cost. Plus it’s not free to charge at Bucees or Walmart. Cheaper than gas, yeah, but not free and takes much longer.

What about the costs to repair? When I see "Hybrid" I wonder if that's just twice as much to go wrong.

Yea but Teslas are built by an oligarch so this won’t make Bernie Sanders happy.

I could see looking into an EV in the future as range increases and recharge times decline. That’s been my hang-up on EVs. I like being able to drive 400 miles, stopping for 5 min to refill, then be on my way again. But EV technology is advancing rapidly and they’ve just about got it down to where I’d view an EV as a viable option.

Can't wait for people to start bitching about power prices and making that the new political tool rather than gas prices

yep

We've come a long way but this is still the Achilles heel. Solid state batteries are promising but this area still needs a major technological leap forward.

I mean technically my 17mpg Sequoia is in this statistic, but not sure anyone would view that as Hybrid/EV even though it technically is.

Downfall is a weird term to use and I doubt anyone said that shite. . Regression to the mean is much more apropos.

You would think, but that’s mostly a misunderstanding of how hybrid drivetrains work. Most people think they are two systems side by side that alternate, but they aren’t. The ICE and hybrid bits are integrated into a single drivetrain. So not only do you generally get reduced wear and tear on the ICE engine itself, but the transmission is vastly simplified, the brakes get less wear and tear, and parts like starters and alternators generally don’t exist in hybrid drivetrains at all.

A modern hybrid drivetrain is an extremely interesting, and deceptively simple, bit of engineering.

He said for driving around town. If you never drive beyond the range of a single charge, ICE has functionally zero advantages over an EV and tons of drawbacks.

Yeah I think we are at the point with EVs where if you are in a 2 vehicle household it is financially inefficient for one of them not to be an EV that is used for your local trips.

Resale is an issue currently, but maintenance and cost of fuel tend to balance that out. It can work out well for people that are good with money, not so well for people that spend every penny they have the minute they have it.

Electric motors are far superior to internal combustion engines for transportation. The list of engineering benefits is long.

The negatives all tend to revolve around energy storage. As energy storage density increases, recharging time decreases and the cost of batteries decreases; the advantages of ICE evaporate.

It wasn't the downfall of EV's, it was the downfall of mandated consumer activity.

No one was against EV's existing as an option. They were against forced production and EOL for ICE.

EV's may be a great future alternative to ICE, but the infrastructure needs time to catch up.
