child care cost initiatives
Lame.
If you can't afford the costs of children then don't have them in the first place. Don't make the taxpayer foot the bill for your incompetence.

for a lot of people, it makes sense for one of the parents not to work
Meh, even with income and FICA taxes, anything north of $30k per year means you're making money. However, there are other factors besides money that might make it worth it.

I don't know what to tell you, that was just the information they gave me. I don't have kids so I've never had to price daycare up here.
Doing a quick search, I did find this stat:
quote:
The average annual cost of infant care for one child in Massachusetts is $17,062, or $1,422 per month
With Cambridge being one of the most expensive areas of the state, it's not unreasonable to assume they were somewhere in the $3k/mo range for day care, which is just obnoxious.

one kid is almost 1000 dollars a month. I could hire a nanny for that.
You think you can find someone to take $12,000 a year for a full time job? Particularly someone reliable enough to take care of your child? You should definitely jump on that if you think you can.

money vs available time
You could say its a direct result of feminism
Makes me laugh when feminism backfires
Feminists for years whine about women in the workplace, and say women should be career oriented instead of family oriented, etc. etc. etc.
So we have most households where both adults have full time jobs these days. Naturally this will increase prices of various goods and services, namely education prices, housing prices and childcare prices.
My sister had a baby last year, and she quit her job so she could be a full time mom. And her husband isn't a rich man by any means. They just live below their means and are responsible with their money.
You can live a lifestyle of luxury and have all the fancy bells & whistles like nice cars, vacations, a nice house, expensive nights out, or you can sacrifice and focus on your kid(s) until they are old enough to start school.

you pay 300 a month per kid?
Depends how many weeks there are in the month. This is an in-house operation and it's bare bones. There are drawbacks, like the one week or less notice that we get when she takes a vacation or something, but it works for us. I just want her to keep them alive and we'll do the rest.

may go in every two weeks and drop $400, while some other parent goes in and spends $200 every two weeks, at the same school, in the same class as my kid.
Sliding scale bro. Unfortunately its made its way to daycares also. Those other parents dont make as much so its your responsibility to subsidize their kids daycare, just like our taxes.

I spend nearly $2k per month for both my kids...
Just kidding, I don't have any kids. I enjoy a sizable amount of disposable income every month

My wife decided to stay at home once our son was born, and from seeing this and hearing daycare stories, so grateful he hasn't had to spend a day in one.
I get and appreciate all the pros associated with a SAHM, and we are considering it for when #3 comes along (that would end up being over $35k/year in child care costs), but there are some great benefits to daycare.
Both my sons knew how to communicate basic needs and thoughts via sign language before they could talk, my oldest knew how to count to 10 almost as soon as he could say numbers, and he could recite the alphabet and recognize letters at 2.5 years old. We teach him all that on our side, but the dedicated, regimented, and repetitive aspect of those lessons at daycare was a huge benefit. Not to mention the ability to teach kids at that age is a pretty difficult task that not all moms suddenly acquire to that level when they have a kid.
I'm sure the non-daycare kids of OT posters could probably do all that by 9 months, but I'm speaking about general trends.

Not really saying you're lying, but if you aren't then they are. Either that or they are really dumb.

This idea... Right here is why the demographics of this country are going to shite.
We should be encouraging the middle and upper classes to outnumber the recipients of govt assistance.
Instead they have far fewer kids than those making far less because they can't afford it, or wait too long because of school loans/professional careers to make it feasible.
Instead what happens is that the less you make, the more likely you are to have more kids, and their kids grow up in poverty to have their own kids who grow up in poverty. Meanwhile that population drastically outgrows those who try and make ends meet without govt assistance.
We should be encouraging the producers in this country to procreate, not discourage them.
I will even drop this off right here...

told me it's 500/mo cheaper than finding a daycare who only watches them during the work week.

If you look at the stat I posted, it's actually reasonable to believe that they were telling the truth.

I hope you trust them, I'm part of a grief support network in my city and I know of three families that lost infants in someones home daycare. All three were infants and weren't watched because the different caregivers were busy with the older kids. I didnt mind paying more to make sure my kid was watched at all times.

Well after looking through some of these posts, I definitely consider myself lucky. The lady that watches our little girl charges $100 a week. State licensed so I can deduct on taxes at the end of the year. She watches up to 4 kids at a time and watches them until they are 2 years old.

Putting kids in daycare is child abuse
Stats show that kids who are raised in a daycare rather than by their mother perform worse in life
But the parents who put their kids in daycare care more about themselves and their materialism than the well being of the child
