re: Missouri Rifle Season
Posted by stein_burgundy on 10/30/25 at 10:05 am to mcpotiger
My dad and I are headed up Saturday night to hunt the week on a 500 acre farm. It’ll be his first time hunting in the Midwest so I’m praying we can get him one in crossbow range. If I can get an opportunity as well, that’ll just be icing on the cake. Weather outlook is good, I’m just pumped to get in a solid week of hunting.
re: Saddle hunters pack
Posted by stein_burgundy on 9/4/25 at 2:13 pm to Theotherpikecounty
For saddle hunting on our lease where I can get the deer with an atv, I bought a Tidewe bag that has a meat shelf an internal frame. I wear my saddle in and the sticks and platform go on the meat shelf. The bag has multiple compartments for all the essentials and multiple strap options for attaching cold weather gear when needed.
I use a mystery ranch popup 38 if I’m saddle hunting on public land where it’s more likely I’d be packing the meat out.
Whatever bag you end up choosing, it takes some trial and error to figure best way to get it organized for carrying your gear and what you like and dislike about it, once in the tree.

It really depends on the public land you’re referring to and what parts you’re trying to access. Most state WMA’s have both walk in and ATV trails. Some public land areas also have vehicle size restrictions which can limit SxS access on the ATV trails.
re: Hip Boots
Posted by stein_burgundy on 8/14/25 at 2:25 pm to freshtigerbait
Bought a pair of Dan’s hip boots 4 years and they’re still going strong. Got tired of lacrosse not holding up after a couple seasons and my feet freezing in cold weather. Roomier boot and the cordura has held up well through briars
re: Saddle question
Posted by stein_burgundy on 7/18/25 at 5:06 pm to freshtigerbait
I try to pick a tree in this order: location, cover, straightness. Saddle setup allows me to get in a variety of different types of trees. And I try to set up based on expected shot location, cover, and or the sun.
As far as the swaying, you can combat that with tether location on the tree. Shifting your tether to the right or left on the tree can help re-center you over your platform. This may mean reversing the direction you wrapped your tether around the tree to get it where you need. If that doesn’t help, shift your whole setup around the tree until you feel centered.
Don’t be afraid to adjust your setup once in the tree. being comfortable will allow you to sit longer.

re: Now that America is back to sanity...can we talk I-10 Mexican caravans?

Drove home to Louisiana from Georgia today. Saw 16 caravans today on our way back. Mostly 3 car caravans. Amazing how they don’t seem to ever get stopped by troopers.
re: Funny Story-Jimbo Fisher relays Derek Dooley recruiting story involving former LSU QB

Gary Crowton was OC at LSU when Flynn won the National Championship in 2007. Matt Mauck was the QB That guided Jimbo to the 1st title at LSU in 2003. Who wrote this terrible article?
You do realize this is a story about Flynn’s recruitment to come to LSU in 2003 when Saban, Fisher, and Dooley were at LSU?

Bought my 8 yr old daughter a Bear Legit RTH package. Got it on sale for under $400 brand new last year and it has tons of adjustment for draw length and draw weight.
re: What brand sunglasses are y’all wearing on the water?
Posted by stein_burgundy on 4/9/25 at 4:10 am to Citica8
I usually have a pair of glass Costa Jose on, and a pair of calcuttas or strike kings on the boat as backup. The strike kings are super light and inexpensive but the plastic lenses can get scratched rather easily.
re: SPF Fishing Shirts
Posted by stein_burgundy on 3/28/25 at 7:25 am to MarsellusWallace
I wear whatever I find on sale or receive as gifts. I have some guy Harvey hooded shirts from Walmart, some no name brand shirts from Amazon, and a handful of Columbias. I’ve definitely turned into a long pants and long shirt guy when fishing over the past few years.
re: LA Deer hunters, how was your season?
Posted by stein_burgundy on 2/18/25 at 6:27 pm to freshtigerbait
Area 9, archery only club.
Killed a doe in October. Missed a nice 8 pt in December right before Christmas. Got to redeem myself on that same 8 pt in early January.
Passed some smaller bucks, and had a few other encounters with nice bucks, just no shot opportunities. Hoping they survive until next season and avoid the coyotes, trains, and the highway.

1st saddle setup (used for a season)
-Trophyline Saddle
-Three 3 step Heliums
-Made top step platform
-Attached to Magellan backpack with Gear Ties
2nd saddle setup (used a couple seasons)
-Tethrd Phantom Saddle
-Amazon Molle Pouches
-Three 2 step Heliums (cut down to 24”) with aiders and daisy chain straps
-Tethrd Predator XL platform with cinch strap
-Carried on Mystery Ranch backpack(plenty straps) not the best access in tree.
Current saddle setup
-Tethrd Phantom Saddle
-Amazon Molle Pouches
-Three Latitude Sticks with amsteel double aiders
-Tethrd Predator XL or lighter XOP platform with amsteel guy USA attachment.
-Mystery Ranch backpack for long hike ins or Tidewe bag with meat shelf for closer hunts
I make all my ropes from Muddy Safety Lines(30 ft rope that comes with multiple Prussiks). They go on sale for $20 a few times a year and can make multiple linemans and tether ropes from it. They are also flexible enough to coil up in a small pouch.
I love the versatility and mobility of the saddle setup. There are an endless supply of vendors and gadgets in the saddle world now. Try as many as you can before deciding, but just know it’s a huge rabbit hole.

Look up Pops Euro Mounts in Prairieville. Think he charges $100. They do a bunch over there.

Ascension Parish

Saddle over well used trail
Elite E35
Gold Tip XT300 with pro series Grim Reaper
Shot a nice 8 yesterday, where he ended up was loaded with sign. Moved a camera and overnight had 3 good bucks come through.
So far have seen a bunch of deer and a lot chasing. Just need another big one in bow range.

I just want it back to archery is either sex all season. Our club is archery only and we have to abide by rifle bucks only days. Either do that or drop the limit to 2 does a person in area 9 and remove the doe days.

Congrats to your son. Heck of a deer. That mount is gonna have a lot of character. I’d love to see the one that put the arse whipping on him.

I don’t live in New Orleans but I HATE this woman with a passion. She is everything that is wrong with politicians in our state. A total self serving POS and an embarrassment to the city and the state. Whatever she can do to get the cameras on her. This goes for Teedy as well as the NOPD lady. Both are a disgrace
re: 308 Bullets
Posted by stein_burgundy on 12/23/24 at 5:36 pm to CSATiger
CoreLokt 180gr round nose soft point was my bullet of choice for a long time. Plenty deer shot with them, and never lost one that I hit. Bullet would mushroom completely and the deer usually wouldn’t be far. Re sighted the gun in with 165gr ELDX for elk in Colorado. Shot a buck with it last year here and it blew apart. Deer fell where it stood but the opposite shoulder was unusable. I’d prefer the soft points for deer.
re: What's the best outdoors related Christmas gift you've ever received?
Posted by stein_burgundy on 12/17/24 at 4:56 am to NatalbanyTigerFan
My birthday is at the end of October so all my outdoors related gifts were usually birthday presents that I’d get in September before hunting season started. Plenty clothes, tree stands, guns, etc. One year I got a Rem 870 20 ga and the next was a Rem 700 .308 with a buck masters scope. Still have and use both today. Have killed a ton of squirrels and deer over the years with them. Just recently took the 870 with us on our Colorado deer/elk trip. Had a good time shooting doves and teal in the plains on our way back home.

I have the eberlestock recon and really like it. I like the forward opening lids for the bino and rangefinder pouches. It is also modular so they offer additional bags/mounts.
re: Public land hunting do’s and don’ts

Like Ol Boy said, check and double check requirements and season dates of the specific piece of public you will hunt.
If someone is already parked where you wanted to go in, pick a different spot.
Bring a compass, phone map app, light, extra light, extra batteries, etc.
Remember if you found a spot by escouting on the computer or your phone, at least 20 other people have found that same spot.
Pay close attention to access and the most up to date usage maps. You may go a long way in thinking you’re far from people and run into another hunter who came in from the opposite direction much closer.
Be courteous to other hunters and get out there and enjoy it. Good luck.
