I generally tip well to make up for poors like you who can't afford more than 20%. These servers are typically young people who have to deal with fake rich people like you who treat them like shite.

I view it as an attempt to cover up their poorness, but their attempt is futile as it showcases their poor business acumen (which I suspect is why they are a poor to begin with).
Or some of us have worked in the industry before. Also, some of us get to know a server at a particular restaurant and we pay them top dollar to continue to have them wait on us.

Just curious. How do you know how much other people are tipping?
Obviously she's a waitress.

How do you know what they tip?
You must be a server. Which means you’re poor

I've never tipped at McDonalds.

Trash.
Not because they tip, but because they eat at Sonic.

You keep doubling down and losing. Only the truly stupid do this.

20% is my baseline, and I'm happy to do so most of the time. I'm getting tired of the tip culture in America though, and nearly every business putting a tip line on their receipts. There's going to be a day when I buy something at a gas station/convenience store and I see a tip line, I'm just gonna walk out.

Early entry for worst thread of the year.

You must be a waiter and poor. I never see what other people tip since I don’t see their bill.

What are you, a waiter? It’s not my job to subsidise your weed habit through some ridiculous code of the streets that says I’m obligated to give you a fifth of my check no matter what your disposition is.
I’ve put my time in as a waiter, and I know the racket. Try taking out the eyebrow ring and pink streaks in your hair if you want to be taken seriously.
In the meantime, settle for my 20% as you continue to climb your way through the school of hard knocks and eventually get fed up enough that you put yourself in a position to get a real job.

I tip between 18-30, the 30 is typically only for certain events and only with certain waitstaff that I know from going to the restaurant they work at often.
Most often I tip a bit over 20%, just due to easier mental math.

I make a good living now and used to work in the service industry (delivery driver and waiter). I'm still tight when it comes to tipping. Not that I don't tip, but I think it's absurd to just assume 20% is standard and people deserve more if they do a really good job. Growing up I can remember 15% being thrown around, then it was 18% when I worked in restaurants, now wanna be ballers acting like 20% is standard. I typically tip 20%, but it's because it's just so easy to determine 10% and double it. Not because I believe that's the baseline.....I'm just lazy with math
