Someone is mad and stupid.

So gun safety worked here.

I've been around guns since I was a kid and I have absolutely no idea how someone who is remotely familiar with firearms and is deliberately and cautiously checking a weapon can accidentally fire it. Your finger should be nowhere near the trigger. Pulling the trigger is NOT something that you should do at all. Unless the weapon discharged without the trigger being pulled, it's gross negligence, period. Knowing you intend to use the weapon in a demonstration and not verifying that it is unloaded BEFORE bringing it into a classroom is gross negligence. And according to the article it sounds like it was illegal to even bring the gun into the school in the first place.

This guy is a grade A fricking moron and should be fired. No excuses.

the first line of the article:

SEASIDE, Calif. —
A teacher who also serves as a reserve police officer accidentally fired a gun inside a Seaside High School classroom Tuesday, police said, and three students were injured.

I would have checked the weapon before the students even stepped foot in the classroom.

Humans make mistakes, even when stakes are high.

A Titan ICBM nuclear missile fuel tank blew up in Arkansas in 1980 because highly trained Air Force technicians dropped a socket from a large wrench, which bounced and knocked a hole in the fuel tank. A rubber shield designed to catch such dropped objects had shrunk and left just enough room for the socket to fall off their platform.

Complete fluke. Could have killed people in 5 states, but the warhead did not detonate. Killed only one.

This American Life had an episode on it in December 2017, where they talked to several people who were involved. Fascinating and frightening story.

He's a reserve police officer. The EXACT type of people that everyone is saying we should arm and put in schools.

quote:
who is a reserve officer for the Sand City Police Department

He's a fricking dumb shite that was not properly trained in how to handle a firearm. Whatever department hired him and who ever was his supervisor should be held liable also.

But no every reserve police officer and law abiding gun owner should not have to pay for this dumb arse.

I'm sure you also think all black people are criminals and that carry Glocks and sell drugs.

Exactly. How can anyone, especially someone about to demo gun safety, not check beforehand to ensure the gun is unloaded. I would have checked at the vehicle when I got there, checked again before the class and checked again when I started the demo.

But give the teacher some leeway. There's really no other method to check if a gun is loaded other than to pull the trigger in a classroom of children, right? /sarcasm

Even better, PBS did a documentary on it last year called Command and Control.

I think you can find it on one of the streaming sites.

Buy who?

I'm a responsible firearm owner and have taught gun safety. He obviously was not properly trained NOR vetted before hiring.

Agreed.

I like how the title tried to imply 3 students were shot. Gotta try to motivate the gun grabber crowd.

So this is the one guy in the entire country that fits this description? I'll give you a hint, no. We have active duty police who are trained like shite. Too busy buying armored cars for towns with 20k people living in them to give a shite about proper training.

Every gun owner is responsible up to the point that they're not.
