You missed part of the article...

Guns and other weapons are prohibited on school grounds, though there are exceptions involving law enforcement.
A cop/teacher shot a student.

Obviously very poorly. But we're talking about a cop here, not just a regular teacher.

The 17-year-old boy's parents were shocked when he returned home with blood on his shirt and bullet fragments in his neck. The student's parents rushed him to a hospital for X-rays. "He's shaken up, but he's going to be OK," Gonzales told KSBW. "I'm just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it."
Yeah, I’m pretty certain that if my son came home blooody and had bullet fragments in his neck and I hadn’t been notified that there would be a lawsuit incoming

Says he is a teacher but also a "reserve police officer". I have absolutely no idea what that actually entails. Regardless, it is clear this person was not properly trained to even teach this course, let alone properly handle a firearm.

Yep. How did he get bullet fragments in his neck after the gun was fired into the ceiling? How did not a single teacher or the officer/teacher see him bleeding and at least take him to the infirmary at the very least?
This story stinks to high heaven.

He was probably properly trained. He just did not follow his training. Just about all drivers are trained not to speed and obey all traffic laws. Very few actually do that.

Also how do you know this guy wasn't properly trained?
Jesus please tell me you're joking.
HE used a loaded gun as a training aid in a class room setting.
Please for the love of God tell me you your're joking and you DO understand that a properly trained person would not use a loaded weapon in an instructional setting outside of a live firing range.
You gun control nuts are so busy frothing at the mouth that this careless incident happened and now you think you can say Ha!! Gotcha, Guns don't make you safer. That you are throwing out all common sense and logical reason. Just you always do in you're emotionally driven rants and raves.
Here's an idea. Criticize my spelling and grammar, I'm sure that will make your argument more believable.
Good lord in the morning you people are dumb.

Well, and reserve officers, and by implied extension, officers, all because of this bizarre, randomly illegal act. That is convenient as shite.

The only solution is mass confiscation. Right?

Are you seriously arguing he cant be properly trained?

Why is it so hard to believe a properly trained person can frick up? Is the training so good that it renders its receiver so impervious to deviation from the training?
Saying a trained gun owner used his gun in a way inconsistent with the training isn't an indictment of the training. It's an indictment of the person who did something he was trained not to do.
Hell, more than a few deranged vets have used their guns in ways inconsistent with their training. The San Bernardino Dorner guy comes to mind. The Dallas shooting too. I don't think part of their training was shooting innocent US citizens.
It really isn't far fetched and you don't have to be a gun control freak to see it. The guy is a moron and since he was a reserve police officer, he was more than likely trained.

There is a difference in not following your training and just having no idea what you're doing. Who the hell checks to see if their gun is loaded by shooting it into the ceiling? I mean honestly?

There lies the problem. A teacher that's a reserve police officer is the exact type of person they would want to carry a gun. Not sure what the training is, but there must be something. Even if they're ex military, they may still be a dumbass. I've heard a lot of stories about dumbasses from my military friends.
You never know if someone is actually unqualified, until it's too late.

This is all true. I can also almost guarantee this guy has never been trained on how to teach a gun safety course. Another angle to this, is that the schools would actually have some say so in how he would be trained. As of now, they do not and we have no idea what type of training he actually has/had.

The question is, will those negative instances be offset because of the positive it brings?
Will the good outweigh the bad? That is where the debate and discussion should be
One side saying "the teaches will all accidentally blow the kids faces off!!!" and the other side saying "a properly trained person with a gun is basically a stealth ninja with no chance of harm!!!!!" are both wrong and make this whole thing impossible to even be discussed

Some idiot who was “certain” that the gun was not loaded. So certain that he decided he did not need to follow all of his training
