Socialist NY lawmaker Emily Gallagher says shoplifting for ‘biological need’ is OK

quote:

It’s her ‘steal’ of approval.

A Brooklyn socialist lawmaker declared this week that shoplifters have a right to swipe items like soap and toothpaste from local stores without getting busted — because of their “biological need” for the products.

State Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher strongly suggested shoplifting should be legalized while joined at a news conference outside Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday by other lefty pols and criminal justice advocates with Court Watch NYC. The group claimed it monitored 360 arraignments over four days and found more than half were for misdemeanor offenses.

“Most of what we saw were crimes of poverty-people who are stealing things like toothpaste, people who were stealing things like, you know, soap. And that means if you’re stealing those things, you need them,” said Gallagher, who reps Greenpoint and other sections of woke northern Brooklyn.

“And we are choosing to protect billion-dollar companies, like CVS and Walgreens, over the people who are struggling to get by. So I would say that the true crime is that there is such incredible wealth disparity in this city that there are people who can be thrown in jail simply for having a biological need.”

The card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America said she would continue to push for “treatment-not-jail” punishments – all but ignoring that first-time shoplifting offenders rarely get jailtime and that lack of enforcement pushed by lefty pols like herself statewide has forced many drugstores to lock products in plastic cases.

She and other pols at the event also called on fellow socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani to follow through on his campaign promise to end “broken windows policing” tactics by NYPD cops that target quality-of-life crimes like graffiti and fare evasion.

I'd like to know what else was on the persons that stole these things. iphone? nice clothes? Clean sneakers?

We're not talking about homeless people stealing this stuff. We're talking about people that would rather steal than pay $3 for toothpaste while also flaunting new clothes and phones, etc.

I’m enjoying the logical extensions of the “biological need” theory.

Bill Cosby had a biological need for sex, soooo only dreams now.

And on down the slope to hell.

The happy juices in your brain are biological, and a brand new contender 32st would really get my happy juices flowing. Guess I can just go hook one up and take it.

There is an abundance of resources in NYC (and most large cities) for the homeless and poor to get food and necessities. These people aren't stealing these items because they need them, they're stealing because they barter them for other things like drugs and alcohol.

These people are not serious. Businesses are not here for you. They are created to do one thing. Make a profit for their shareholders. These people need to be locked in a building with coloring books and padded walls

In NYC, they set up on the streets and sell the stuff right outside the very stores they steal from

Here, I see them selling detergent in parking lots in the hood when I pass through

id love to see Walgreens and CVS respond with the percentage of these that are these type products versus make up and small electronics.

She’d probably offer up her body to all the lonely dudes that can’t get laid, but they’re not interested.

When I used to work in retail pharmacy every single day someone would come in and steal soap and detergent and toilet paper. Things like that. And the thing is, it wasn’t because of “need”. They would then turn around and sell it to the local corner stores owned by foreigners for practically nothing who would then sell it in their stores. They did it for drug money.
