Post a picture on your Neighborhood page, someone took the time to spay or neuter. When you said might be in heaven, I took it that you took the cat out. Glad you didn't.

You’re a lucky man. I only have hairless cats that walk in my home and won’t leave

His name should be Baw.

Bump for update.
If we don't hear from him soon we may need to send help. That cat had him right where he wanted him.

I remember back when pussy used to show up at my door. Enjoy it while it lasts, friend.

I got two which are very spoiled rotten cats that live inside.
I enjoy having them around.
There are good and bad with having pets around.
They say the cat chooses you.

That's his home now, and you are his pet. Congrats.

With the price of pet food, his owner probably gave you a gift.

I vote you name him ZONK (yes - in all caps).

Yeah, people are dumping pets with this crazy inflation. I live in a neighborhood of apartments and random, homeless cats are showing up everywhere. A few dogs too.
That pisses me off. I know times are tight for a lot of people but damn, take some responsibility for your pets.

Some worthless POS dumped a tiny kitten on the highway in front of my house in a thunderstorm. Poor little guy was not even weaned. I brought him in and raised him on formula until he could eat solid food. He is 2 years old now and has killed over 100 mice in the yard. In honor of the kind folks on this board who gave me lots of helpful advice, I named him Baw. He is a wonderful pet. Looks a lot like the kitty in your pics.

Take him to the vet and see if he’s microchipped. They will be able to tell you where’s he’s from and who owns him if he is. If he’s very tame and well fed his prior owners probably took good care of him and want him back

People often think a friendly cat means it had an owner, but that isn't always the case at all. Some cats are just chill and some warm up to certain people in a hurry.
I noticed he has a tipped ear. He's likely part of a trap neuter and release program where they neuter him and release him back to where they found him. This helps cut down on the population. Also helps with fighting. A neutered cat can still look like they have big balls, but they are empty.
To the OP.
As mentioned earlier, posting on the Nextdoor app is good. There is also an app called Pawboost you can post found animals too as well. Pawboost sends out alerts to multiple animal Facebook groups.
It would be wonderful if you kept him as a pet. And it's nice of you to make sure he doesn't already have an owner. Both are very considerate and I appreciate people like you.
I actually doubt he has an owner, so I suggest keeping him around while you look and possibly keeping him long term as well. It's really special when a sweet cat finds a good person.

You are one of my favorite posters BTW, because I enjoy the gifs.
Definitely keep the cat if you are willing. I think that's great. Especially one less cat off the streets. Strays often turn out to be the sweetest cats. In the meantime you can post on those 2 suggested apps, Nextdoor and Pawboost. You can also check the lost ads if you really want and check with any neighbors just to be sure.
Someone mentioned don't declaw them and I agree, but you can trim their nails from time to time and get some scratch mats for him to use instead of potentially risking furniture. Mine never scratch furniture anymore since I added a bunch of alternatives and started trimming their nails.

My two indoor cats are former outdoor strays (mother and daughter) who hung around our old house all the time. Brought them with us (and inside) when we moved. We've had a few outdoor cats come and go at our new house, most of them pretty cool. They like our back yard because fenced in and an oasis among a bunch of dogs. Plus, the food and water.
Current outdoor cat is a handsome grey cat with white boots and chest (clipped ear). Has gotten at least 5 squirrels, 6 snakes and innumerable lizards. Loves being pet.

One found me that looks just like yours about 3 years ago. I can’t wait to get home to see her now. She stills bites me on occasion but purrs non stop when I pet her. No mice, no snakes no vermin since Gumbo arrived.
As they say though and I have a plaque that says “Dogs have owners. Cats have staff. “. Very true.
Your floors are ok. Work hard and get some heart pine floors one day.
