I handle my alcohol very well. And when I’m around her family I drink maybe 3 beers. That’s it.
Lightweight. You have to put down at least a 6 pk

You're right. I definitely need to mature some and should've kept my mouth shut! I take full responsibility.

Is it really that hard for you to go somewhere for a couple of hours and not drink?

Show some respect!
Keep your pint in the glove compartment like the good Baptists do.

When you attend an event for a specific person, you respect that persons beliefs or you don’t go. If you feel the need to bring alcohol to every event, it sounds like you have a drinking problem, particularly fi it triggers you to the point that it resulted in an ex-girlfriend.

You must be very young. It's not about right or wrong, it's about respect.
If you can't go to a single family gathering without drinking for the simple reason that your GF (and her family) asked you to then you have a lot of growing up to do.

Thats how it starts. First its you cant drink around him at their events, next thing you know theyre coming over to your place and the little woman is telling you that you must respect them at your place as well because he's a preacher..
This right here. These type of people don't stop until you completely bend the knee.

Over reaction to break up with you but typically you respect the house you’re a guest to.
If it was for your birthday they’d respect you if you wanted to have drinks at your house.

I was a groomsman for a good friend of mine and before the wedding all the groomsmen, groom, and priest sat on the truck tailgate and pounded beers and smoked cigars all afternoon.
And when preacher got a bit buzzed got to listen to how much he dislikes black people and his joke about how he has 2 robes, a priest robe and a klan robe

This has always been a crock of shite to me. If I throw a party and someone chooses not to drink for whatever reason I never give them shite for NOT drinking. I let them enjoy the party in their way. So why is it that non-drinkers sometimes make drinkers conform to what they do? Why can't I have a good time my way, and you have a good time your way?
It's usually not a huge deal...except for when I worked for a former preacher who threw a company crawfish boil and made sure to text everyone before hand to let them know alcohol was prohibited. Yall ever had crawfish without beer....just something missing. The second annual crawfish boil was mugh lighter attended

My parents and in-laws are hard southern baptists. My dad hasn’t drank in 40+ years and my in-laws have never drank.
I just don’t drink around them out of respect. It’s not hard. They know I drink.
I had a beer in front of my parents one time because we went out to lunch when I came back to my home town to run a half marathon, they were pretty understanding.

In this case it's fine to say if people are allowed to drink or not.

In this case you didn't throw the party so you don't get to dictate the way people attend the party.
This isn't complicated.

You're totally right. People who throw the party DO have the right to dictate if people drink or not, but that doesn't mean it isnt a dick move. It was an employee APPRICIATION party, and the employees were told they were not allowed to drink at. Every had a pretty lousy time and kinda wished they could have let loose and had some drinks together. The second year noone really went.
Do people have the right to do this...totally, but it's kinda rude IMO

There is something I think most of y'all missed. Twice in this thread the OP mentioned that he “might not agree with the preacher’s career but he respects his choice”. Made me wonder who in their right mind could have a negative opinion about somebody being a preacher? Why would he even mention this? I thinking the OP is a anti- religion, anti-Christian college kid most likely a fairly hardcore left wing. I’m guessing his challenge to their wishes was based in some resentment to their Christian beliefs. And I mean how difficult is it to understand if it is a party at the home or honoring somebody who doesn’t drink you don’t drink. It’s not about you and want you want to do. You simply can just not go if it bothers you, why even question it.
