No, its not a dick move at all. He paid for the food. He set it all up. He did not have to do that at all. You weren't required to be there.
Look, I'd absolutely prefer to have a few beers at something like that but if you can't have a good time without drinking you need to reevaluate some things.

What indont understand is how us bringing beer would have ruined his time. To be honest, I do evaluate stuff like that and sometimes I do kind of find it sad but people just have a better time when there is alchohol. If there's a boil or cookout without alchohol, the party just kinda fizzles after the meal. Letting people bring beer would have really led to a better time for everyone, but I'm really not sure how it would have ruined it for him....that's kinda what I need help understanding here.

Maybe he didn't want to deal with people staying well after the boil b/c they were busy boozing. Maybe he didn't want to have to worry about one of his employees getting drunk and doing something stupid. Hell, maybe he or one of the employees is secretly a recovering alcoholic and he didn't want that kind of temptation around.
Who cares? Bottom line is everyone who went got some free food that he was nice enough to buy. I don't understand why not allowing beer somehow ruins an event that you didn't have to be at.

Didnt think of this, but that's totally valid.
And ruin is a strong word, but fact is a lot of people chose not to go the second year.
You mentioned some valid reasons that I respect the hell out of, but what gets me is the people who say no drinking simply because they are Baptist and choose not to drink and dont think others should either. That's inconsiderate IMO.

That's why I said probably and if you don't think that strong negative feelings against religion are more prevalent on the extreme left I don't know what to tell you. He absolutely made sure to hint that he might dislike the career path of being a preacher multiple times in the thread so I just made an observation and made a possible connection. I seemed to trigger you though.

This. My family get togethers always had two groups. The drinkers and the non drinkers. Unless someone got naked wasted and started showing their arse, it’s never been a problem. Me, I was always going for “walks” or “trips to the store” with my cousins...

I can't agree that people automatically have a better time because a party has alcohol. I think it depends on the guest. If it's a family get together than I think that point is nonsense. Alcohol in no way impacts the joy of visiting with family from my experience. I could see if it's a party where most people don't know each other and need to loosen up.
