It is a terrible place to live, but a nice place to visit from time to time.

Was in the FQ last weekend. Very pleasant despite the odd drugged out gutter punk making noise and being stinky.
If going to FQ, do a little research first. Great food at the right places, but there are a ton of shitty tourist places too.

Muriels, Stanley, Napoleon House, Tujaques are a few quality options. Johnny's Po-boys for poboys. There are plenty others though.

Go out to the riverfront. Gives you a better appreciation for the city.

It ain’t Atlanta

You know, if you were to accost Atlanta people on the street and ask them what "28-3" meant, better than 90% of them would have no idea. A similar fraction would probably only have nice things to say about New Orleans.

You can connect the dots.

Beautiful architecture
Walkable neighborhoods
Warm winters
World class food city
No open container laws

The city has a lot going for it in spite of its government and criminal inhabitants

Something nice? I live here. I have a bar in my backyard.

Not nice? No, you can't come over...

We have been out to dinner Uptown multiple times recently, and we have neither been assaulted, robbed, stabbed, accosted, or encountered any criminal activity at all.

Also work downtown. No issues. You should be ok.

Going there Saturday first time ever. I expect fantastic food at cheap prices but wondering what else is great about this city. Also every city has cultcha so not too worried how different can it be vs Dallas?

Nearly all the bars and restaurants people have mentioned in this thread were there 40 years ago when I frequented the place regularly. That fine wine aging with time effect.
If I were kidnapped and thrown in the trunk of a car and driven to NOLA and let out, I'd know where I was in about 10 seconds. Can't say the same for Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta.
And lastly, that one-of-a-kind smell you get a good whiff of from the bar and restaurant garbage when it is set on the curb in the early mornings as you walk along Burbon back to your hotel at about 6AM after drinking all night. Only in New Orleans.
