Bonus: You won't have to deal with many people from Baton Rouge and other parts of Louisiana because they profess to hate New Orleans and swear they will never spend another dime there or set foot in the city.

The WWII museum is awesome! Can spend at least a solid day at the museum and still feel like you didn't see it all. Food is great. Just be aware of your surroundings when walking around.

I've only been there once but I had a great time. Food was awesome, Bourbon Street was fun. I didn't go on it but I checked out the riverboat that was moored at the pier. Watched it churn to life and set out up the river. The people onboard seemed to be having a great time. Pretty impressive watercraft.

ok there have been tourist attacks in the past five years

There have never been attacks on tourists in Chicago?
Well check this newslink

I mean, anyone can cherry pick a few attacks on wasted tourists who ventured into questionable areas at night by themselves.
Don't get completely wasted and venture into questionable areas by yourself at night and there is an extremely good chance you will not be attacked by a criminal. Like near statistical zero.

And what is the most recent such event? If some criminal is targeting tourists to come behind and take their money, he is really bad at criminalling cuz it aint that common.

It is more likely that you'll get catcalled or yelled at by a gutter punk who won't follow up with any physical act or that you'll see some stupid cultcha fight like what happened on Canal a couple weeks ago. The first could just as easily happen in Chicago, Denver, or anywhere else with young homeless people around. The second in pretty much any major city east of the Mississippi.

OP, enjoy yourself and don't worry too much. Don't be stupid and you'll be fine just like 99.9999% of the tourists who go to NO.

Just remember - Hydrate!!!!!

Had my car broken into at city park on Saturday, they took a pair of shoes but left my sunglasses. I consider it a win

See the French quarter architecture during the day. Stop into various bars and have a drink. See the sight there and then eat an early dinner and get out of the quarter. Uptown, warehouse district, roof top bars, but do not be on bourbon after dark. Bourbon st is the last place I would ever take a visitor

You have PLENTY of options there.

The options just dwindled considerably.

The various neighborhoods and neighborhood places are one of the best parts of New Orleans. To me, FAR better than the French Quarter, not that the FQ doesn't have its good points.

If you want good live music, ditch Bourbon Street and go to Frenchmen Street.

How many years ago?
80-90s-early 2000s crime was way worse than now. shite the 90s was the goddamn killing fields in the age of crackhouses.

You had a little unicorn period post Katrina, but even then there was crime to some extent- same as most other cities. Stay to touristed areas and don't go walking around by yourself at night- your likelihood of being a victim is very tiny. You are more likely to be in an auto accident.
