My plans as an over the road trucker, was to retire at 70. But at the age of 65 I had open heart surgery. It was a wake up call that my life style as a trucker was killing me. So I retired at age 65, got into the gym, pickleball, and a social network of friends. I feel great and look forward to a lengthy retirement

society needs to start pushing younger retirement for a myriad of reasons. Unless you just dont know how to enjoy life w/out working, retiring early while you are healthy enough to do more is a great choice.

In the fire service many people work the full 33 years to get 100%. I retired at 30 and have no regrets except I wished I'd retired at 25 years.

I retired at age 56. No regrets. I was in excellent health, had hobbies that required vigorous exercise. I will reach age 84 next Monday.
I can still jump rope.
Had my Physical exam and Lab work a couple weeks back.
No alarm bells.
If you can stay busy and entertained will be the Key.

I dunno. But I’m planning to retire early at 62. A few more years to go, but I’m over it. Time to live life for me.

most people retiring at 55 usually are 30 years in some kind of state agency or govt job
it's great to have that option but you also only get a percentage of your final salary and with costs of everything going up you better have all your debt paid off as well as your home paid off and make sure your medical insurance coverage is adequate
ideally if you work longer you get a better retirement

I retired at age 60. I'm now 85 and still seem to be doing okay.

This is certainly true in my line of work. I'm out at 50 and i'll go do some low stress consulting for PE firms.

Love this. What kind of weekly exercise or workouts did you do in your 50s?
Also, food and drink habits?
I’m genuinely curious as I turn 50 this year and have really been focusing on getting back to better shape.

Check out the Rule of 55. May be an option for you. I retired at 56 and don't plan to use it, but def good to have in the back pocket if needed.

^^^This. I have been dealing with some health issues (all being controlled by meds and have continued hitting the gym etc) but I don't want to be the one who pushes retirement date, only to fall out in the parking lot leaving on my final day of work. I'm 1-3 years away from retirement.

There is no way to know if his life would have ended the same way at the same time. Changing variables can change everything. He could've died sooner, or lived 20 more years.

I'll be retiring at 55 after 30 years of teaching. I have seven years left.
