I retired in April. I had prepared a resume before I retired, fearing I would be bored within a week. It hasn’t happened yet. I drive across town and mow my Mom’s yard and have coffee with her once a week, we keep our new grandson one night a week so the new parents can get a full night sleep, I organized my garage, built shelves for the attic, go to local college sporting events, go to lots of local festivals, and post lots of things on Tiger Droppings that sounded funnier in my head.

Plan and execute personal projects. Retired at 62 so I could do for me/us what I did for them. Renovated the house - sold the house - built a new house - redid the truck - renovated the camp. Rinse & repeat.

This is my plan. Building my retirement home now, and planning to get projects going on day 2 of my retirement.

Work part time, restore old cars and fly the rest of the time. Life is good.

I can retire in a few years. I’ll be around 50. First thing I’m doing is renting something close to the beach in Costa Rica for 90 days and going bang every decent looking hooker down there. I’m going to set records. It’ll be like the Cheers bar, everyone will know my name. I’ll fly back for a few weeks to recharge then go back another 90 days. They make you leave every 90. They may put up a statute of me down there by the time I’m finished. Will also probably do some sport finishing here and there.

After that I plan on renting a small RV and travel the entire US. Hit as many baseball stadiums and national parks that I can for another 4-5 months.

After that return to work to pay for it all.

I love these threads where the boomers post about retirement to dab on the millennials that will never be able to retire

Any millennial who can’t retire comfortably is dumb.

Random thoughts from a retired guy.
I was burned out on my job when I went, but still missed it so badly that it took many months to relax. Odd but true.
Sense of purpose, pride in skills and accomplishment are huge. Recognition is important...
So much of who we are inside comes from what we do in life. Losing that can be a major adjustment.
So, look for activities which might help ease some of those issues.
Examine your finances and figure a balance between earning and leisure.
Stay busy with a regular schedule which also keeps you active and healthy.
Avoid destructive habits and sitting around.
Find a few groups of people to stay socially engaged.
Consider faith in some activities.
Give some time to your community.
Contemplate all of your needs and find ways to meet them all.

All this really tells me is there are a lot of people working until they are essentially dead or about to die.

No, there is something more to it than that. People thought of that already.

Then get in your car and go.

If I were ever in your position I'd pick a direction and head off to see things I've never seen before. Or get on a plane if you're so inclined. Just go.

Statistically the 2 years in a man’s life he’s most likely to die are 1) the year he’s born, and 2) the year he retires.
—3) the year he dies

I'm 66. fully retired x six years. I am not bored at all. Staying very active with competitive age group tennis tournaments. Play tennis 4 to 5 times per week. Fly Fish about 2 to 3 times every couple weeks. Read a fair amount. Travel a fair amount.Maintain my pond and a clay tennis court. Spend time with the Mrs. I am in good shape for my age but fatigue keeps me from being bored. Boredom is welcome and infrequent. I am really grateful to God for this time in my life. My advice is to keep active and no need to sweat the small stuff.. I do not relish the stress of working and 35 years of it was enjoyable but I'm am glad to be done.

I’m not the type to sit on the couch and watch TV during the daytime.
Once the sun goes down binge watch “The Andy Griffith Show” every night until you’ve seen them all five times each.

Report back to us then.

Good luck Goober.
