We had some discussion on the neighborhood FB page about a rule that is currently in the HoA bylaws.

The rule is that no political signs are allowed in yards. Needless to say this has caused some heated discussions.

Is this legal? Seems like they are infringing on free speech.

Nobody cares who you're voting for anyway. I never understood the appeal of yard or vehicle political signage.

Wallpaper the front of your house or put one of those big signs on your roof. That’ll teach em. Then “compromise” on the yard sign.

Your HOA collectively agreed to give up that right by adopting the bylaw.

No.

You entered an agreement with the HOA when you bought your house. Its not "infringing on your free speech". You can still go to the courthouse steps and scream that god hates figs or that buggery isn't a crime.

"Free Speech" restricts the government, not your HOA.

FWIW, I think its a shite rule.

Only trashy people think other people give a rats arse who you vote for. Sounds like the HoA made a good call considering the people that likely live in your trailer park.

Agreed. My old neighborhood had this and I personally loved it. A neighborhood should be a retreat from the world, not a place filled with marketing.

Political signs in yards are trashy. Good on the HOA for putting their foot down

Yes it is very legal, free speech doesn't apply to private property, you can restrict it as much as you want. You agreed to give up complete control of your property by signing the covenant.

Political signage in front of your house invites all types of mischief. Why take the risk of somebody damaging your property over a silly political sign? I learned this at an early age after somebody vandalized my car because I had an anti-Edwin Edwards sticker on the back window.

There’s a guy in my neighborhood who always puts this sign out.

State actor vs private actor. Then read first amendment. State actor vs private actor. Re-read first amendment. That will be $495.

Not allowed in mine and every now and then someone puts one out and we bet on how long before it’s gone and the neighborhood gets an email reminding us not to do it.

It’s one I like because it looks like shite. Plus at this point frick ALL politicians.
