Is your HOA the government? No, its a contract that you signed. This has nothing to do with "muh free speech".

Our rule is that you have one sign and that's it. Can be for politics, real estate, your kid on the sports team, etc.. But you only get one. I wish it was 0.
They actually have public spaces that are designated as "allowed" to have signs and they get plastered during election time.

Can you explain to me the point and appeal...do you think that someone is going to make up their mind on who to vote for because they see your sign??

President, governor... no.
But you'd be surprised at how many people don't have a clue as to who is running for LOCAL and locally oriented offices: judge, school board member, state rep, parish council, registrar of voters, coroner, etc.
Those yard signs get the word out as to who is running, and I have literally heard (dumber) folks and family say,
"Well, I see a lot of my friends and neighbors with signs supporting Joe Blow for school board-- I'll ask about him", or if they are lazy, "hell, I guess I'll vote for him, too".

If you are in an HOA, you signed up for it... Most HOA's are restrictive and if you buy a home with an HOA don't complain after the fact about the restrictions. The answer to your question is you are infringing on your own speech because you are in an HOA. You have given authority to the HOA to do this.

There are precedents set on both sides in different states, so it may depend on where you are.
New Jersey, Massachusetts, Arizona, California, Nevada, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Delaware have sided in favor of homeowner's right to express political views via yard signs, despite HOA by-laws.
Kansas and Pennsylvania have ruled HOAs were within their rights as private entities to restrict the placement of political signs.

Has anyone challenged a HOA in court on this matter? If not, then it is untested and uncertain.
