they have other models with rubber soles and stuff that go on sale a lot. But if it's one of their traditional shoes, they are good.

I've got 4 pairs all factory seconds - Daltons, Fifth Avenue, Lake Forest, and Carlyle.

These shoes are awesome and will last me for quite some time with recrafting. I'll only buy on sale (~$200) and I have an outlet in the area, which helps with sizing and such. When you think about it, a pair of sale outlet Cole Haans will cost $150 now and they are lower quality compared to a few years ago, so you're really not paying much more for a much better shoe that will last longer.

I have multiple pairs and they all wear great. A couple pairs fir differently than the others and are nto as comfortable, but as dress shoes go they look great, wear well, and for the most part are comfortable.

The re-crafting is the bomb...

AE has gone through a few ownership changes recently. I think that as a result, there overall quality is not as high as it used to be.

That being said, they are still my “go to” and can’t be beat in terms of quality for price.

My most recent pair are some factory seconds that I got on sale. I’m very happy with them.

also had a couple of shoes with toe cap creases (after just 4-5 wearings) and AE wasn't exactly on top of it when I sent them my concern/complaint.

So, I switched to Alden.

The quality certainly isn’t what it used to be, but I still wear multiple pairs. Alden is definitely better, so good choice on the upgrade

I wear AE and Alden. Both good shoes, and if you take care of them they will last for a long time. Key is to treat the leather a few times a year and replace soles and heels as needed.

My best pair of shoes are a pair of salesman's samples that I bought at a J. Peterman store in Chattanooga. Over 20 years old and they look and feel great.

My AE story...

about two years ago, I was in the AE store in Canal Place. The staff there knows me as I have been a regular customer in store for years. They are great people.

I commented that there was a beautiful dark blue dress wing tip shoe that was on the display shelf about a year earlier, and asked if it was still available. They told me that they knew exactly which shoe it was, The Morgan, and it was no longer made, but they checked national inventory and there was one pair left at the factory--it was a 9 1/2--my size! So I bought them.

Well, two weeks went by and no package. They showed delivery at my house, but no package ever arrived. I don't live in a place that would have theft from the door.

So, the folks at my local store felt bad, as it was the last pair in national inventory. They made a call to AE in Wisconsin, then informed me that AE would make me a one-off pair of blue Morgan shoes in 9.5, but it would take about a month....no problem!

Well, about a week later, one of my neighbors comes to the door with a package--said the UPS people left it at their back door, which they never use. The original package was delivered to the wrong address. So now I had the originals I ordered and another on the way. I called AE and told them about it and offered to pay for the second pair--they charged me $100 for the second pair.

So now I have 2 pair of Morgan's in blue.

That is customer service!

Here is the Morgan in blue...

There’s a lot to be said for good customer service. They had a mistake on their website during the last big sale: the Acheson had the “on sale” text on the thumbnail but was listed for full price. I called them, they said the image was mistaken, the shoes weren’t on sale. But they’d sell me a pair for the discounted price.

The REAL problem is that after perusing their catalog, you realize you need 10 pair of dress shoes.

No kidding.

Interesting, there is apparently a huge market in used AE shoes. Weird. Reddit thread on it.
