I have never heard of Juneteeth up until the last couple of weeks.
And judging by other posts in this thread, this is not uncommon at all. I would venture to say that more people have not heard of Juneteenth than have heard of it.
So all you people trying to act enlightened can go frick right off.

It is only being discussed as a holiday because POTUS was having a rally the same day and he's "racist".
Was never discussed nationally when anyone else was POTUS for over a century. Not even Obama.

I have no issue with Juneteenth being recognized as a holiday. Seems fairly legit to me.
But yeah, I'd never heard of it until I was in my 20s and worked with a black girl from West Texas. Tons of us grew up in the South around lots of black people and had never heard of it.

I'm going to guess that a lot of black folks (perhaps outside of Texas) couldn't explain it aside from it being connected to freeing the slaves.
That's not a slight to black people, rather just that it seems like a local holiday that has spread to symbolically represent something broader. In the south we're exposed to all sorts of cultural/entertainment things that are created by black folks, and I can't recall a single reference to Juneteenth. Our history classes spent tons of time on slavery and civil rights and again, no recollection of ever hearing about it.
So proclaiming it's the product of ignorance seems pretty silly.

You need to look into the 4th of July. The vote was actually on July 2. John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence. He was said to have turned down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest.
Christmas too. Look into that one while you're at it. Find a birth certificate or something. I'm not buying baby in a manger in freezing December.

We have to many stupid holidays already, Juneteenth is probably a more deserving day than many of them, but again, I think we have too damn many and this is not coming from a place of love or respect. It is a political and business move.
