Congress passed the 13th Amendment, and it was ratified by the states on December 6, 1865, ending legal slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth celebrations began in Texas, but it grew popular in other areas of the south. Now it's catching on all over, like Cinco de Mayo.

I had no idea Juneteenth was about freeing slaves until a couple weeks ago. I just thought it was a party in Atlanta.

I have no problem with juneteenth being celebrated. it symbolizes our country making a major change for the better.
